Yesterday, I helped a friend in the UK to change his ISP from AOL to
One.Tel.

I first uninstalled AOL and then, using a magazine CD, I upgraded the
IE from 5.5 to 6.

However, I was amazed to discover that, on the banners for IE6 and
Outlook Express, AOL claimed to have supplied both.

Maybe AOL was the source for the Magazine CD?

How can I remove their advertisement?

Are you referring to the little logo at the top right corner, and the
text that appears at the top of the window alongside the web page's
title?

Hi probonopublico-ga!

Sounds like what you have there is a AOL "branded" copy of IE.
It's harmless, and easy enough to get rid of. Here are some links that
give instructions/suggestions on how to remove the ad tag.
If you have any questions about the information I have provided,
please request a clarification of my answer, and give time for a
response before rating my answer.

Thanks so much and best of luck to you!

"The window bar may show something like, "Internet Explorer brought
to you by AOL". One method to get rid of this is through the
Registry. Backup your system. Search the Registry for the words
in the title bar.It may look something like "provided by YZ
Networks". Modify to "".

Another method for removing the branding without having to tinker
with the Registry.
1. Close Internet Explorer if it's open.
2. Click on the START button, then click on the "Run..." menu
item. A box will open.
3. Type the following line in the box exactly as shown then press
OK and restart Internet Explorer. ("Clear" is case sensitive)

rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear"

"And it's actually not that hard to de-customize an ISP's version of
IE, as these readers suggest:

[A] reader noted that using the ISP software to install a browser,
etc. was OK but that one was left with the ISP name, etc. in the title
bar. This is easily removed through the registry. Just search for the
wording that is inserted by the ISP. In my case, for EarthLink, that
wording was "provided by EarthLink Network, Inc." EarthLink technical
support said to just change this to "". Works just fine. -- Bill

[T]he tip about IE on CD mentioned the minor point of possibly
installing a "branded" version; i.e., the window bar may show
something like, "Internet Explorer brought to you by AOL". Here's a
method for removing the branding without having to tinker with the
Registry. It's been tested and it works. Note the comment about case
sensitivity. Surprisingly, if one types "clear" instead of "Clear", it
won't work.
1) Close the browser if it's open.
2) Click on the Start button, then click on the "Run..." menu item.
You get a box. Type in it, without the quotes, "rundll32.exe
iedkcs32.dll,Clear" ("Clear" is case sensitive)
3) Press OK. Restart the browser.

Hi, Cellphill

I'll give it a go tomorrow, and see.

Sounds good though.

As a supplementary, how can you tell a Hammer from a Hummer?

Let me tell you: a Hammer acts it up whilst a Hummer hums along for company.

They make a great double act.

probonopublico-ga,
Glad I could be of help! I always knew all my seemingly useless
knowledge of AOL related material would come in handy again someday.
:-)
It was a pleasure working with ya, and thanks so much for your
generous rating and tip!

'till next time,

Hi probonopublico,

I suppose we are all sort of related, virtually speaking, in that we
are part of the GA family - yourself included. Cheers, hummer
