Question ID: 204992
Is there any way to allow the receipt of attachments in Outlook 2002
(XP) (not outlook express)? For example, if an .EXE attachment was
sent to you, Outlook XP would block the attachment, claiming it's
unsafe... I'd like to know if there is any way to 'unblock' unsafe
messages, and if so - how to do it? Thanks..

Hi nhdw,

The blocking of attachments of certain types in Outlook XP is a
precautionary move by Microsoft in order to limit the spread of virii
that spread via email attachments. However, this can be annoying if
you want to receive attachments of those types. Fortunately,
Microsoft provided a fix to this. Below are instructions from
Microsoft's support website on how to accomplish this:
________________________________________________________________________
NOTE: It is usually a good idea to back up your registry before
editing it. If you don't know how, please ask me using a request for
clarification.
________________________________________________________________________

1. Quit Outlook 2002, if it is running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
See if the following registry key exists. If it does, skip to step 5.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security

If the registry key does not exist, create it. To create the registry
key, locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft

a. Click the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.
b. Type Office, and then press ENTER.
c. Click the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.
d. Type 10.0, and then press ENTER.
e. Click the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.
f. Type Outlook, and then press ENTER.
g. Click the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.
h. Type Security, and then press ENTER.
5. Click the Edit menu, click New, and then click String Value.
6. Type the following name for the new value:
Level1Remove

7. Press ENTER.
8. Right-click the new string value name, and then click Modify.
9. Type the extension of the file type that you want to open in
Outlook 2002. For example:
.exe

To specify multiple file types, use the following format:
exe;com

10. Click OK.
11. Quit Registry Editor.
12. Restart your computer.

I hope that this answers your question. If anything is unclear or is
not working, please use the "Request for Clarification" feature to
request for clarification before rating this answer.

Perfect. It works. Very simple to do. Nice, extra clear walk-through
of the process though. Many thanks, secret901..
FYI, I didn't need to reboot at the end of the process, just shut down
and restart outlook.

There is something like Outlook 2002 Restricted Attachment Options
from Slovak Technical Services, Inc (www.slovak.com) which give an
additional tab at the Tools|options: Attachment Security & Options. It
lets you choose different extensions which are allowed. Don't know
about other features and newer versions. But this looks good.
