How many e-tailers (retail or B2C e-commerce sites) are there in the
US and how do they break among the different retail branches?

I can answer this question in terms of dollars, but not, I'm afraid,
for actual numbers of e-retailers.

The sales information compares ecommerce sales to total sales, for a
wide variety of retailing sectors such as furniture, sporting goods,
clothing, electronics, etc. The data are for sales in 2001, which I
believe is the most recent year available.

Let me know if this data would be of interest as an answer to your
question.

mb01 -

Thanks for submitting your question to our service. Turns out that you
ask a very interesting question, one that it seems either not many
have asked - or almost no one has answered. The only reference to an
e-tailer count I have managed to find is quite historic:

"Shop.org, a trade organization for on-line retailers, and the Boston
Consulting Group estimate there are 1,000 on-line retailers with
annual sales of more than $500,000 each, and more than 10,000 smaller
niche players."

Would you be interested in other quantitative measures of e-tailing,
e.g. sales, number of customers, etc? Note that 2002 and even some
partial 2003 data is available.

thanks,
ragingacademic
