The Tropical World is in many areas agriculturally very productive but the people as well as the farm workers are hungry. why this absurd situation? |

Bangmal-ga, Agreed...it's an absurd and tragic situation. The answer usually given is twofold: (1) there are distribution problems -- even if the food supply is abundant in the big picture, there are always local needs and the infrastructure may be so underdeveloped that it is difficult to move food from where it is produced to where it is needed. (2) cash crops -- farmers may be tempted to grow coffee, cocoa beans, and other things that can sold on the international market instead of the foods needed locally. I'll leave it to one of the other researchers to dig into this in depth and provide you the appropriate source materials. |

Another possible explanation is that most of the agricultural land in the third world countries is owned by groups of landlords who are reluctant to distribute the earnings fairly. |

The reasons are complex. However, my perpective is that it lacks sound political, economic, and civil infrastructure. It also lacks private ownership of resources, which should be monitored by honest government. Corruption tends to be a huge problem. Claudietta Google Researcher |
