How can I put items listed in the sidebar and the bookmarks on
Netscape 6 in alphabetical order?

Cycas,

As there is no way to do what you actually requested in Netscape 6,
are either blackbird-ga's comments or my (hammer-ga) comments
acceptable as an official answer?

To summarize:

There are several ways to sort your bookmarks while inside Netscape,
as detailed in the Comments, however, there is no way in Netscape 6 or
7 to ensure that the sort order "sticks". Hopefully Netscape will add
this feature in future versions.

To put bookmarks in order in Netscape 6 (Mozilla version):

1. click 'Manage' under Bookmarks in the sidebar 
2. click View 
3. click on the sort option you want 

Hope this helps - don't know about the other items in the sidebar.

Thank you.I did what you said and clicked sort by name and the
bookmarks were listed alphabetically but they don't stay in this
oorder . How do I get to keep them listed alphabetically. Also all
these bookmarks what were on my sidebar  have dissapeared. How do I
get them back on the side bar and how do I get then the be listed
alphabetically on the sidebar? Can you  help?

I don't believe you can. This is a source of frustration for many
Netscape users, but I've never seen a solution for it. I also use
Netscape, and have searched for this myself. Netscape 7 is no better,
BTW.

Well, I'm not sure what I'm doing differently but when I put my
bookmarks in alphabetical order they seem to stay that way!
If you can't see bookmarks in your Sidebar, click on Tabs (on the
Sidebar toolbar) & make sure Bookmarks is ticked. Check also that
Bookmarks is ticked in the Navigator Preferences page (click on Edit,
then Preferences, then Navigator). (If you can't see the Sidebar,
press F9)

blackbird Thank you I have got back the sidebar with the bookmarks but
when I click sort by name the book marks are listed in alphabetical
order but the don't stay that way after I click sort by name what do I
do to keep the setting there. There is a black dot in front of the
option above how do I move it to sort by name. Also this does not do
anything for the  bookmar list on the sidebar which is my main
cocern.many thanks

When I click on Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks, View, and click Sort by
Name, I get bookmarks in alphabetical order. When I then go back to
Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks, View, there is a black dot beside Sort by
Name, as it should be. I don't know why this doesn't work in your
case. I am using Netscape 6 as part of Mozilla 1.3 - perhaps the
Mozilla version doesn't have the bug that is causing the problem.
I have certainly been very happy with Mozilla 1.3 & would recommend
it.

dear blackbird I do not have Mozilla. That may be the problem.However
I take it that the bookmarks on the sidebar can't be done
alphabetically because after I that clicked sort by name and the books
are sorted alphabetically the list on the sidebar is not. Anyway
thanks for your help and input.

In the Sidebar, you can click the bar that says Name and sort your
Bookmarks. They will sort within their folders. They may or may not
stay that way the next time you open Netscape.
