Hello Pepelm-ga:

I am providing you a summary of my research and links to interesting
websites where you can get more information including a chat
room-forum for the Zebra enthusiasts.

ZEBRA AND THEIR EATING HABITS IN THE WILD AND IN THE ZOO.

There are mainly three kinds of Zebras. These types include the most
common Gravy’s Zebra, Plain Zebra and Mountain Zebra. There is also a
fourth type known as ‘Quagga’ which is almost extinct but efforts are
under way to preserve this species. You will find Gravy’s Zebras in
most Zoos around the world.

Zebra's live in sub-desert, plains and arid and bushy grassland. The
Zebra feeds on coarse grass, sedges, bark, leaves, buds, fruits,
roots. Their diet requires a high volume, so they spend about 60% of
their day eating. In drier times when food is scarce, eating can
occupy up to 80% of their time. The most common type, Gravy’s Zebra
mostly feeds on tough grasses, but they also browse on leaves, which
may constitute up to 30 percent of their diet.

In the wild, they eat non-selective grazing of available grasses,
especially grass stems and sheaths. Their teeth are very high crowned
and are adaptive to chewing silica-rich grasses. Large barrel-shaped
body holds a very large amount of relatively un-nutritious grass. They
can also eat a variety of nutritious food. (See below)

In the Zoo, They are mostly fed grass hay, alfalfa, herbivore (hay)
pellets, and grass but they also eat oats, diced vegetables, fruits ,
trace mineral, salt and horse chow

“The equid digestive system preadapts these animals to life in
habitats dominated by grasses and shrubs. There are strong
indications, however, that equids were not always restricted to such
marginal habitats as they occupy today. During the Pleistocene (1.6
million to 10,000 years ago) some now-extinct North American species
inhabited forested regions. Primarily grazers, most of these animals
continue to exhibit considerable flexibility in diet and browse forbs,
shrubs and small trees”.

”Grant’s zebra can be found in the grasslands, savannas and open
country of Africa, including Southern Sudan and Ethiopia, down to
central Angola and eastern South Africa”.

Grazers, zebras prefer tall coarse grasses which, when removed, expose
the shorter, more succulent blades preferred by wildebeest and
gazelle. At the Zoo, the zebras are fed a diet of hay, oats, diced
vegetables, salt and horse chow”.

Wild: savanna grasses occasionally browse leaves, bark, roots and
stems - graze singly at night for about 1 hr at a time - water during
day
Zoo: grass hay - assorted browse
