Hi, I'm looking for a well-respected and established men's tailor in
the San Diego / La Jolla area of California. Now, to be clear, what
I'm NOT looking for is someone whose business is primarily based on
letting out the seat of a pair of pants.... or shortening the sleeves
of a sportjacket. Instead, I'm looking for someone who has established
a very good reputation for making great men's suits for executives in
the workplace. So, in other words, I'm looking for a custom tailor who
will take time selecting fabrics with you, will take time taking your
measurements, and will actually make a suit for you from scratch. I
can't seem to get any good recommendations here in the San Diego area.
And I'm looking for an independent tailor with a good reputation...
not really interested in Nordstrom's or Neiman's. Can you help?
Ideally, I'm looking for two or three names, addresses, and telephone
numbers that I can choose from.

In case there's any question or confusion (see bobbie7-ga comment),
I'm not very interested in using a tailor that travels around the
country (on a pre-set schedule) and comes to San Diego once or twice a
year (if that!) to do business. I'm familiare with tailors who do
that. Some of them are very good. And I know that that system works
well for some clients... but, personally, I'd prefer to find a local
tailor with an established reputation based in the La Jolla / San
Diego, CA area.

A recent article in the San Diego Business Journal mentions three
high-end, small scale clothiers in the San Diego area that serve many
executives and professionals (but the article isn't specific about
their tailoring services, so I don't know if they'll meet your needs).
 They are:

Brady's Clothing in Fashion Valley Mall, Coranado, and La Jolla

Gentlemen's Quarter in La Jolla

and not quite as exclusive, but close:

Ron Stuart Men's Clothing in San Diego.

These stores should certainly be able to steer you to a custom tailor,
if nothing else.

Let us know if this helps at all.

Hi, pafalafa-ga

You suggested:

Brady's Clothing
Gentlemen's Quarter and
Ron Stuart Men's Clothing...

all are good stores... but they are just that -- stores that sell
high-quality suits "off the rack". And yes they would be able to
recommend excellent "tailors" who -- no doubt -- those stores use
themselves for their own alteration work.

But, if you read my very first posting, what I really want is a custom
tailor -- with custom experience -- who will take time selecting
fabrics with you, will take time taking your measurements, and will
actually make a suit for you from scratch.

And I'm looking for someone who has established a very good reputation
for making great men's suits for executives in the workplace, again,
from scratch. There are plenty of custom tailors like that in LA and
NYC and in any big city, actually. But, for some reason, I'm having
trouble getting a good recommendation here in San Diego. And, yes,
I've even looked in the yellow pages.

So, no... those stores are'nt what I'm looking for. But, I appreciate
your effort. Any other ideas?

Adeperalta-ga,

Men looking for custom suits might also consider Giorgenti.

How it works:

- Giorgenti wardrobe consultants / clothiers travel through out the
United States and Europe.

- An expert tailor will take your measurements and analyze your
body type to ensure a proper fit.

- Make selections from their vast collection of exclusive
fabrics. Expert clothiers will help you select the right fabrics, and
styles based on your taste, and clothing objectives, keeping in
mind what flatters your hair color, eye color, skin tone and
physique.

- Your custom made personalized Giorgenti clothes will be delivered
to you within 6 weeks.

I hope this helps.

Hi,
I think the true answer to your question is that there is none.
It's funny - we don't consider that as being an acceptable answer in
this day and age. But, here in San Diego, the overall social and
business climate is so very casual that no tailor such as this could
stay in business. So, they go to nearby LA.

That seems like the best bet for you too.

Here's my suggestion -

1. L & A Tailoring
2911 University Avenue, North Park
619-299-7326
Brothers Liam and Minh Tran are throwbacks to an age when men's suits
were not found at shopping malls but were made to fit. Trained in
Vietnam, the Tran brothers have worked in the U.S. for 20 years and
are experts in every kind of tailoring and alterations in men's and
women's clothing. They also offer a wide selection of fabrics for
custom suits, which begin at $450. Custom items normally take two to
three weeks. Monday -Friday, 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00
a.m.-5:00 p.m.

If you want additional advice, I suggest that you call Ron Ford at Ron
Stuart in Downtown. He will give you a straight answer.
