I would like to know if there is a listing of ALL the Companies that
have been publicly traded on the United States Stock Exchanges since
the early 1920's. This should include those that have merged or been
taken over by other companies and would include name changes that have ocurred.

Would a database do?
You enter a keyword and it will list companies
ehich have similar word in the title?

I have some old stocks certificates that for companies that are not
presently listed on any of the exchanges. I am hoping to find a book
or listing that has all the companies and if they have merged or
otherwise changed names, if those names are still valid and what are
they?

There are many ways how to locate that information.

Several are listed here:

Easy way may be to use usual search engine with apropriate keyword.
For example, if you have stock of now defunct
 CYBERIAN OUTPOST
and type into google:

stock : cyberian, news

you get :
-----------------------------
PC Connection to buy Cyberian Outpost
 has agreed to
acquire struggling Net technology retailer Cyberian in a stock transaction ...

Fry's resumes talks with Cyberian Outpost |
... . retailer has resumed negotiations
 with Cyberian Outpost just ...

which will tell you that comapny was aquired (in this case By Fry's ..)
--------------------------------------

comprehensive archive of changes is at
http://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/srch-edgar

but that may be more then you need

One more point:

Even when the share are worthless as stock certificates,
they may have value for collectors.
So - before you throw them out, check this link:

hedgie-ga,
Thank you for the response. I had already tried searching for the
domain names in many forms but nothing came up. I appreciate your
response and will check the other ways that you have suggested. I am
on Jury Service presently so will need a few days to get into this
thing. If it works out, if I am able to learn what I need from your
help, I will certainly post a TIP for you but will wait till then. I
posted the lowest price, not knowing if the answers would really be a
help. We'll see.
Thanks again.
