Question ID: 205345
How do I find a picture of my great grandfather, Theodore Ludwig
Knaak, in his military uniform? He lived in South when the war broke
out, but he enlisted with the North. He fought with the 11th Missouri
Infantry led by Brigadier General Smith, which was part of the 16th
Army Corps of the Army of Tennessee under General Sherman. He knew the
hardships of war when he fought in several battles, one of which was
the battle of Mobile Bay.

barnchild -

Thanks for posting your question!

Are you sure of the spelling of your great grandfather's last name?
(could have changed over the years...) Any other info? Rank?
Anything else?

thanks,
ragingacademic

Theodore Ludwig Knaak was a private of William Fallowill. In January
of 1866 he received an honorable discharge from the Missouri Urban
Infantry. He was paid a sum of approximately $400.00 at this time.
These are all the details I have about his military career.

Clarification: Theodore Ludwig Knaak was a private of William
Fallowill. In January of 1866 he received an honorable discharge from
the Missouri Urban Infantry. He was paid a sum of approximately
$400.00 at this time. These are all the details I have about his
military career. I have seen his name spelled Knack in some history
books, but this is incorrect. The correct spelling is Knaak. He is
in the local history books of Deerfield, Illinois, because he was a
founding father of this town. His military life occurred prior to his
life as a doctor and businessman in Deerfield. It is the military
part of his life which we are trying to investigate.

Hello barnchild,

Could you provide us with the source you have that causes you to feel
that such a picture exists? That might help researchers.

Thank you,
wellen

Dear Wellen,

I don't know the source for a picture. I'm not able to find the
military records to do any research on my great gradnfather. My
brother has his discharge records, so we know that much. I am
confused because the army of the Tennessee should have been a
Confederate army, but he enlisted with Missouri and fought under
General Sherman. Every time I try to search for it, I get nowhere.

Christena,

Researchers are still searching, I'm sure we haven't given up. But I
just found this web site which might be of help in giving you some
direction for your search. It is a site by someone who found out a lot
of information about his family members who served in the Civil War
and he tells exactly how he did it.

Hope it will help you too!

Hi Christena,

It's me again :-)

Here is the link to the National Archives where you can request the
records that they should have available on your ancestor...which
should provide you with more information about his military service.
This is not something a researcher can do for you.

http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/military/civil_war_records.html#where

There is quite a bit online about his units which you have probably
already found, but there doesn't seem to be anything about him
specifically.

I also found this in my searching which explains that the "Army of the
Tennessee" does not refer to the state of Tennessee but rather to the
Tennessee River. [ http://www.tngennet.org/civilwar/misc/battle.html
]. There was also a Union "Army of the Ohio", "Army of the
Cumberland", etc. as found in this article
http://civilwar.bluegrass.net/FamousUnits/armyofthetennessee.html .
