For the following countries:
Vietnam
Singapore
Indonesia
Malaysia
Pakistan
Thailand
China
Hong Kong
I am looking for information on clinical depression:
1. Hard data on prevalence
Can you help identify or access the published or unpublished studies
on depression in that. Ideally, I'd like info on:
the name and the year of the study
the place of the study (name of the region, urban or rural)
the number of sample
the characteristics of the sample, eg. age, sex, health condition,
etc,
the sampling method (random non-random sampling, etc)
the diagnostics: depressive disorder, major depression or depression
in general
the prevalence rate (overall, by age groups, by sex or by urban/
rural).
2. General information
The following are areas where I seek general qualitative comments.
Most common treatment modalities, cost issues, physician treatment
preferences and reasons for this
Health policy issues, i.e., difficulty with access, what systems are
in place, what systems are lacking,
Local ethno-cultural attitudes that may influence access to care,
stigmas associated with depression, etc...
Risk factors
General access to care or lack of, barriers to treatment
Most crippling aspects of the disease from their particular cultural
and social perspective.
Suicide: incidence, attitudes towards suicide, prevalence among
depressed patients
Access to psychotherapy and to unusual treatment modalities such as
electroconvulsive therapy.
Density of practitioners: are they well served or underserved in
relation to the ratio of number of population to mental health

wooner-ga,
Your question is very interesting. However, if you look closely at
the amount of information you are requesting, I suggest you either
reprice the question or break it up into single questions by country.
For each of the countries you have listed, the information is going to
be quite elusive, and, in my estimate, could take 3-5 hours of
research per country (possibly more.)
Secondly, I doubt that most researchers will want to take this on
unless you make it clear that all of the information you request of
each country is not "necessary," but "desired." I can assure you that
we will try our best to find the information requested. It is very
possible, however, that answers for all aspects of your question are
simply not available.
You might want to look at the following question, and see how it was
susequently broken up and priced.
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=172139
The two resulting questions:
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=181040
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=174100
Please also keep in mind that language is also a very real barrier!
For the questions above, there were many websites I uncovered that I
simply could not understand because there were no translations
available. I can forsee the same problems with your question.
I, for one, will be happy to try to tackle this question if you would
consider repricing and rephrasing your criteria for an acceptable
answer.
