To clarify:

I am talking strictly about U.S. on all points.

Here's where I'm really going with this... This gets away somewhat
from the original questions posted but this is why I'm asking... (i)
is *membership* on the wane for professional associations generally,
(ii) is *participation* by the membership on the wane in terms of
attendance at meetings and willingness to serve in voluntary
leadership positions, and (iii) what are professional associations
doing to (a) improve the value of their offerings, (b) sell value to
existing and potential members, (c) increase participation by members,
(d) diversify their membership, (e) diversify their services or
offerings, (f) remain relevant, and (g) otherwise redirect their
attention and efforts to continue to stay profitable and viable?

If a Researcher thinks he or she can do a knockout job on this
multipart question, but not for $45, please post a comment to that
effect and I will adjust the bounty to fit market realities.

Greetings ExecutiveHotline:

I've spent over two hours trying to locate all the info you seek but I
haven't been able to succeed. Also, I wasn't sure whether you wanted
spending trends of corporations or single business travel choices made
by individuals, so I included both. Also, did you want global or US
national? Anyway...I did locate the trends information and will share
it:

An article published 9/18/2000 at
http://csmweb2.emcweb.com/durable/2000/09/18/p16s2.htm stated "Taking
the kids along is the most significant trend among business travelers,
up almost 250 percent in the last decade. Children tagged along on
more than 32 million business trips in 1998, up 32 percent from 1997,
according to the Travel Industry Association of America."

Other trends were mentioned in the same article but including children
was cited as the most significant. Another article from the same time
period is located at http://www.iht.com/IHT/SUP/TRAVAG/lead0202.html
also cites that family travel with business travel was a trend.

Of course, the rise in booking travel over the Internet is an
ever-growing trend as evidenced in many places including the web site
of Marybeth Bond, CBS Evening Magazine Travel Expert at
http://www.marybethbond.com/mbstats.shtml - she also cites among other
statistics that "70% of all travel decisions are made by women."

General US travel trends and findings for 2001 leisure and business
travel are listed at
http://agency.travelwisconsin.com/Research/MarketResearch_Active/DomesticTravel2001.shtm
and one seems to echo that the family travel trend still continues:
"Eighty-five percent of the business traveler had one household member
on the trip, 11% had two household members and 3% percent included a
child on their trip."

A corporate view travel trend is reported at
http://home3.americanexpress.com/corp/latestnews/business-travel-prices.asp
as "Over the past few years, companies have tightened their travel
programs and reduced air travel spending by using more leisure-type
fares," said Brian Mogler, Vice President, Supplier Relations and
Consulting, American Express Corporate Travel. "But many will see
their average fares rising -- now that airlines have put new
restrictions on the lowest fares and stopped applying corporate
discounts to them."

*********

After 09/11/2001, the trend seemed to be less air travel when
possible. A survey article at
http://911.meetingsnet.com/ar/meetings_new_businesstravel_survey/index.htm
stated "Among respondents who said their business travel plans would
continue to be affected by the terrorist events, about six of ten (57
percent) said they would drive rather than fly whenever they could-a
decline of 12 percentage points from the November YPB survey, but
about the same as the September and October surveys. About 41 percent
of the January survey respondents said they would take fewer
international trips, 37 percent said they would cancel a future
international business trip, and 24 percent said they would cancel a
future domestic business trip."

Alongside this trend, an article at http://iht.com/articles/78559.html
published on 11/29/2002 states "changes," Craig Koch, chief executive
of Hertz Corp., said in an interview this month. "And the interesting
thing is that they don't stop changing."

"Customers are booking more frequently at the last minute, and
business travelers are increasingly turning to rental cars instead of
planes for short to medium-length trips. As a result, the companies
are being forced both to streamline their businesses aggressively and
to venture into new areas...Corporate customers who used to rent for a
day or so at a time are now booking vehicles for longer periods, as
driving replaces airplane flights."

Regarding travel trends initiated by businesses because of the recent
war, please see the short article at
http://warimpact.meetingsnet.com/ar/meetings_btc_report_confirms/ -
this seems in line with the initial 9/11 concerns.

Regarding trade association membership trends, I located information
from http://www.asaenet.org/research/keyfacts/1,2236,showarticle=yes%5EarticleId=1275,00.html
which is the web site for the American Society of Association
Executives. ASAE states on the site "With more than 25,000 individual
members, ASAE is the largest organization of association executives
and industry suppliers in the world."

I reviewed the ASAE newsletter at
http://www.asaenet.org/pdf/foundationnews.pdf and it mentioned a
report "According to ASAE Foundation study Facing the Future: A Report
on Major Trends and Issues Affecting Associations (1999), the
challenge facing every association is to uncover ways to implement and
manage change successfully."

There is also a report mentioned "Research Update For Scan Fans: The
ASAE Foundation futures scan field book will be released at the ASAE
Annual Meeting and Exposition in Hawaii (August 23–26). This
publication will help associations of all sizes and circumstances find
ways to incorporate scan data and process into their decision making.
It contains a combination of trends and implications for associations,
case studies and effective practices in environmental scanning and
strategy development. The scan field book will also get updated on an
ongoing basis.

Another report offered is "A Report from digitalNow: A Road Map to
Success By Hugh Lee and Don Dea A Report from digitalNow: A Roadmap to
Success highlights thought-provoking research and discussions from the
2002 Associations: digitalNow Conference and is supported by emerging
trends identified in ASAE Foundation environmental scans. It describes
an effective plan for associations to overcome competition for their
members’ time, attention, and money. The report also features
important case studies that present real-world examples of what
associations are doing to improve service to members and to anticipate
and embrace change. $21.95 ASAE Members ($28.95 nonmembers) Product #

As a result of the sucessful lie telling by President Bill Clinton,
the truth is rarely told anywhere. This is perhaps the most
distructive trend in human society. Since the motivational meetings
are mostly lies, half truths, false inference, hype and spin, the
attendies are subconously realizing that the meetings are worse than
useless. In my opinion, their value will not be restored until we
again value the simple unvarnished truth. The bottom line is inversely
proportional to the number of meetings attended. Neil
