I am trying to find a copy of a book I once owned. I don't know the
title nor the author. It was a book of short stories (3 or 4) each of
which featured a unicorn. The word unicorn was in the title, I'm
pretty sure. The cover of the book showed a famous tapestry of a
unicorn in a pen, as shown here:
http://www.unicornlady.net/Tapestry/tap7.html
I read the book at least 20 years ago, so it isn't anything newly
released.

Hi - the only book I've found that comes close is an anthology edited
by Bruce Coville, "The Unicorn Treasury". Published 1988.

The paperback edition *doesn't* have 'The Unicorn in Captivity' on the
cover, though it's possible that the hardcover did - do you remember
whether your edition was hard or paper?

Here's a list of the stories in the anthology - any memory-joggers?

Unfortunately, that isn't it. My copy was a paperback, and I know for
sure that it was before 1988. And the book I read had only 3 or 4
stories, not that many. Another thing to consider...it was definitely
not a kids book. I said I was 10 when I read it...it was given to me
by someone older who knew I liked unicorns...but obviously they had
never read it themselves. The last story in the book was a bit,
*ahem*, adult in nature. Not porn, but definitely erotic.

Could it be a book of 86 poems split into 4 or 5 sections? This one
came out with two versions which had the tapestry on the cover

Thanks for trying!

Go to this site, see if you recognize a title:

http://www.unicorncollector.com/bookstore.htm

I thought it would be easy sailing, but since older books only offer
decriptions of the cover art, it's a tough find. A page count, or a
definition like "Children's Book" might help.

Also see

http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?author=&title=unicorn&new_used=U&binding=HARD&isbn=&keywords=stories&min_price=&max_price=&submit=Begin+Search&currency=USD&mode=advanced&st=sr&ac=qr

Which is out-of-print hardcover books with "unicorn" in the title and
"Stories" in the decription.

No, none of those titles sound familiar. It is hard to tell whene
there is so little description given for the books that are out of
print.

Hello Breanne,

Sorry, couldn't find what you're looking for.

Here's a collection of 27 short stories with a unicorn theme:

Immortal Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle (Editor)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0061052248/qid=1023207882/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/103-4374433-1843869

Booklist says it "may be the year's best anthology of new stories.
None of the unicorns here is cute, some are barely corporeal (...)".

Peter Beagle is author of the great fantasy novel "The Last Unicorn"
(1968), which spawned an equally great animated movie in 1982.

Good luck to the next researcher.

Breanne,

This was a fun question. I’m amazed at the hundreds of unicorn sites
available. I found a book for you that has The Unicorn in Captivity on
the cover. I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for because it’s
not a collection of short stories but is instead a reference book on
unicorn mythology. I’m not approved as a researcher yet, but I thought
I’d give it a shot. Check it out.

Closer than I got, czh-ga, but that's a non-fiction book looking at
unicorn folklore...

Not enough information for me to identify it, but here's two things
for you to try: go to bookfinder [the only booksearch worth bothering
with, since it searches nearly all the others] and enter "unicorn" in
the title and "stories" in the keyword blank. You get quite a few
possibilities no one has mentioned yet:

http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?author=&title=unicorn&submit=Begin+Search&new_used=*&binding=*&isbn=&keywords=stories&min_price=&max_price=&currency=USD&mode=advanced&st=sr&ac=qr

You can also try putting in "unicorns" in the title box instead:
http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?author=&title=unicorns&new_used=*&binding=*&isbn=&keywords=stories&min_price=&max_price=&submit=Begin+Search&currency=USD&mode=advanced&st=sr&ac=qr

Take a look through those and see if any ring a bell. Was it
illustrated, btw?

The other thing to try is go to
http://www.dnai.com/~ochobbit/lost.html which is the Department of
Lost Stories at one of the best sf/fantasy bookstores in the world,
The Other Change of Hobbit in Berkeley, California (no, I don't work
for them). They know a LOT, they have all the necessary reference
books for finding books and stories, and they often have nothing
better to do than to than bat back and forth e-mailed or phoned
queries among the staff and any customers who are present. The results
are often surprising. Tell them everything you told us. Be sure to
mention the tapestry (though it's extremely well known and no doubt
has appeared on the cover of scores of books).

Actually, that one was recommended by czh a few days ago. That book
is not the one I'm looking for. Thanks for trying, though!

This may be a little late, since you asked the question over two years
ago, but since there is no answer...

The book you are looking for is called "Unicorns II" edited by Jack
Dann & Gardner Dozois. Copyright 1992 and published by Ace.

I found the book since I remembered the name of the author who wrote
the story of the unicorn on the porno movie set was Janet Kagan, then
I simply looked for her bibliography, an voila!

Hope it helps, and better late than never, eh?
Tanamin
