I am looking for an accurate infrared thermometer that will be
suitable for Dogs and Cats. In searching the web, I have found many
rectal veterinary thermometers, and infrared thermometers for
industrial uses, but I would like something accurate enough for
gauging health, and non-invasive. In the case of the cats, they are
young kittens, and I would worry about even relatively thin rectal
thermometers (and I would imagine the dogs would not be so thrilled
either) Any good suggestions?

Hello Carlton-ga,

Thank you for your question.

My search returned the following results:

I located two thermometers that measure infrared heat waves emanated
from an animal’s ear; it takes one second and is made specifically for
dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

========
Pet-Temp
========

“The Pet-Temp and Vet-Temp Instant Ear Thermometers measure infrared
heat waves emanated from an animal’s eardrum region to provide an
accurate reading of core body temperature in one second. They are the
only ear thermometers designed specifically for companion animals and
work effectively on dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea
pigs, ferrets and chinchillas.”

The Pet-Temp has several advantages over other available methods of
measuring your pet's temperature:

- Accurate ear temperatures in one second
- Extended sensor arm designed to measure the temperature
of the horizontal ear canal for accurate readings
- Measures a "core" body temperature
- Less messy than rectal thermometers
- Less stressful for animals and owners
- Durable design allows for over 5 years of reliable operation
- Replaces glass mercury thermometers
- Signals with a clearly audible beep when the measurement
  is complete
- Measures in either a Fahrenheit or Celsius scale with an
  accuracy of +/- .3 degrees F.0

Vet-Temp
========

“The Vet-Temp is the only ear thermometer designed exclusively for use
on companion animals. By measuring infrared heat waves emanated from
an animal's eardrum region, the Vet-Temp provides an accurate reading
of core body temperature in one second. For veterinary clinics still
measuring temperatures rectally, switching to the Vet-Temp can result
in significant time and cost savings. It is also much less messy,
difficult and stressful on pets. Clients also prefer this less
traumatic method of measurement.”
- Clinically Proven Accurate
- One Second Temperature Measurement
- Less Stress for Clinician and Patient

I located the MiniTemp Infrared Thermometer. One man said he even uses
it on his dog and his wife. I would not recommend this as it is not
very accurate and it’s not made for animals.

“Ever since I got my MiniTemp I’ve been like a kid with a new toy,
measuring the temperature of everything from my refrigerator, freezer,
oven and grill to my wife and my dog.”

Accuracy:
± 2%, or ± 2°C (± 3°F) whichever is greater

Bobby:

Thank you so much!

I just got a pair of litter mate kittens, and one night, one acted in
a manner
I had previously seen only in dying cats: he hid, was unresponsive,
wouldn't
drink, his brother couldn't get him to play, etc.

It was Sunday night, and I thought about bringing him to the pet ER,
but I
couldn't identify any specific symptoms: no tenderness, his eyes were
clear,
no puking, diarrhea, etc. So I figured I would take him in, they would
ask me what
was wrong, and all I could say is "he's acting weird". I have had lots
of cats, and I
do not undersetimate their recuperative powers. So I piled towels
around him to keep
him warm, put water within his reach, and checked on him every hour.
At about
3:00AM, he was gone, lying in bed with his brother and my mom (who was
visiting),
so I gave a "dodged the bullet" "whew!".

But I realized I have two cats, my landlord (duplex) has two dogs - I
don't know the thermometer would have helped that night, but it would
have at least made my
decision abou going to the vet easier, and founded in a more rational
process, rather
than just my emotion (heart pounding, ten tons in pit of stomach)

So thanks for your help. I really appreciate it!

Carlton

Carlton,
I also have two cats so I fully understand what you went through.
I'm glad to have helped you in your search for a thermometer for them.

Exactly what I was looking for. Considering I spent more than 30
minutes in an unsuccessful search, money well spent!
