Hi, when I'm logged on I keep getting these annoying pop up windows
called "Messenger service" with people asking that I look at their
websites.
I tried to get rid of it but in vain...
My question is how do I get rid of them (ie block them from entering
my PC environment)
Thank you !

Hi dogsbollocks,

Good day and thanks for your question.

The best and easiest way is to shut down the Messenger service. Click
on 'Start', then click on 'Run'. Type 'command' or 'cmd' and click on
OK. You will reach the DOS prompt.

At the DOS prompt, type "net stop messenger" and press the 'Enter'
key. The messenger service now stops and you won't get any more pesky
messages. Type 'exit' to quit from the DOS prompt and return to your
Windows desktop

I hope this answered your question. In case you have any
clarifications, please don't hesitate to ask. I will be happy to
attend to it

Warm Regards,
aditya2k.

This idea certainly sounded good to me. I had asked Google about this
very thing in another posted question and after doing what they
suggested - the obscene message boxes still worked there way through.
I just did exactly what this "answer" said to do. I went to start,
run, cmd which took me to the box where I typed in "net stop
messenger." The reply was. . . ""net stop messenger" is not
recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or
batch file." When I typed in "exit" that worked and I got out of the
box. Is this worth one star?

Am excellent program called "Mini Popup Killer" gets rid of messenger
popup spam and eliminates lots of other annoyances.

This is the free version of the program:

What version of Windows are you using? The "net stop messenger"
command will not work for Windows 95 and Windows 98. Also, for
Windows 2000 and Windows XP you also want to disable the messenger
service by using the
"sc config messenger start= disabled" command. Note, you must have
the sc.exe file in the \winnt\system32 directory for that command to
work.

Alternatively, you can right click My Computer, select Manage, double
click on Services and Applications and highlight Services. On the
right pane of the window, you can highlight Messenger and select
properties using the right click. Then for Startup type you can
select disabled and for Service Status you can select stop.

i wonder if anyone will read this...it's been a few months...but i
just had a cooment..yes this works...but you have to do it again
everytime you re-boot....it doesn't save it...so everytime the pc is
shut off & restarted the pop-ups come back.

You could add the line:

net stop messenger

in your windows startup routine
