Libertarians want to abolish all forms of welfare by all levels of government with private charities. This would be an improvement if these are small local charities and few people fall through the cracks. The transition would be painful as asets of private charities are not presently sufficient to fill the real needs of people without a resonable alternative. The big problems with government welfare are: 1 Low motivation for marginal students and employees to make themselves more competitive in the job market. 2 Female humans have too little incentive to delay conception until they have the ability to support children without outside financial help 3 Very high overhead costs. 4 rare success in moving people from dependency to self sufficiency. 5 Criminals are double dipping = collecting from the welfare while the have considerable income from the crimes they commit. Large national charities have the same five problems, plus officials are often overpaid considering the poor results. With thousand of small charities, efficency by a few would make the big charities and government welfare look bad by comparison if enough people analyzed the operations skillfully. Neil |
