Sometime between 1965 and 1977 I read a Reader's Digest Condensed Book
written by a medical doctor whose name I cannot remember. Nor do I
remember the name of the book. The subject matter was how all life on
earth evolved from the sea and how life is an eternal struggle...as
cures are found for each disease another disease will take the place
of the former disease. I didn't save that issue of the Digest and the
memory of that book haunted me for years. I finally wrote to Reader's
Digest explaining that I would like the book title and author and they
very kindly sent me a copy of it gleaned from an old issue of the
Digest. I had it for years but for many years now it has been lost
again. Can you find out the name and author of that book? I can't
begin to tell you how much it would mean to me.

I'm not sure what else I can tell you about this book. If memory
serves it begins with how life began with one cell creatures in the
ocean; how they progressed and how they had to fight for life against
predators and disease. I believe it eventually talks about modern
medicine. I'm sure the author is/was an M.D. How he came to write
the book, I know not. As for the time frame I gave in my original
question...my uncle gave me a subscription to Reader's Digest some
time after 1965 and it continued for about 10 years. Believe me, I
wish I could give you more info but I've given you what I know.

Hello iampersnickety,

I managed to track down the complete list of of all Reader's Digest
Condensed Books published since 1950. I went through all of the
authors with the MD and DR designation and looked for reviews or
excerpts from the books on the internet or in the library.
Unfortunately I did not come up with anything.

If you want, I could submit the complete list as an answer and perhaps
you could find the right book from the title? At this point I am not
sure if I will be able to find this title for you. What country do you
live in? Perhaps this was a localized Condensed Book. I still am
waiting for the response of one Reader's Digest researcher, but at
this point my hope is starting to run out.

Dear tisme-ga: I am thrilled that you have the complete list. I am
fairly certain that it was written by a physician...that much sticks
in my mind. Perhaps the fact that he is/was a physician was mentioned
in the content of the book rather than added to his name. I also
recollect that the author was definitely a man. One clue that has
come to my mind...I read this condensed book in a monthly issue of the
Reader's Digest. Since looking for this book, I find that there are
so very many Reader's Digest Condensed Books it must be that they
regularly published volumes of them that were not necessarily
published in the magazine as well. That may be of some help. If all
else fails I would gladly accept a COMPLETE list of all titles and the
approximate dates of publish as an answer. AND I would gladly throw
the question out there again for further research at more money. I am
a fanatic about getting the answer to this. And I thank you from the
bottom of my heart for your help so far.

Ah, yes...also in answer to tisme-ga's recent question to me...I live
in the USA. And it was the USA edition of the Reader's Digest
magazine in which I originally read the book I am looking for. Thanks
again

Sounds good iampersnickety!

I am not going to give up looking for this. This question does not
expire until June 20 so perhaps I can submit the complete list on that
day if nobody gets any closer than I am right now?

I am awaiting replies from some more contacts that I have found and
may have the title for you before then. I am sure that other
colleagues of mine are also investigating into this for you, so there
certainly still is hope. :)

PS: I will try going through the titles from 1965 to 1977 to see if
there is anything that matches up without the author being designated
as MD or DR.

Dear tisme-ga: Am delighted with your response. I'll leave it all to
you. I'd be happy to wait till June 20...but if these things are done
on a commission basis, I wouldn't want you to lose anything by
waiting...since you have made such great progress. Will be watching.
Thanks,
Sharon

Was it perhaps The Naked Ape, by Desmond Morris?

Maybe you'll recall the title by browsing this list:

<http://www.booktrees.com/UsdRDC.HTM>

Or, go to ebay and do a search on "reader's digest condensed." You'll
find many titles to browse.
