I assume you mean the American versions of the snowman, such as the
bigfoot and sasquatch, and that you want to exclude the Yeti and
non-American versions, is this right? Also, what do you mean by
"celebrating", the start of the general interest in this unconfirmed
creature?

In contrast to techtor, I assume that you mean men made out of snow
(created by children and even adults during the winter), and
representations of them in collectible items. However, your reference
to collecting makes me wonder whether you are refering to snow globes
-- or perhaps to snow globes with snowmen in them. In any event,
could you clarify what you mean?

I spent quite some time on this question, but sadly, there is not much
documentation available about the origins and history of the snowman.
I can post the results I have, including a huge keyword search list,
but the results only answer one portion of your question:
1) History of snowmen.
...........
These sections would still remain unanswered:
2) When did American's start collecting, celebrating?
3) What is the story of the snowman?
4) What is America's fascination with them?
If you would like me to post my results, albeit incomplete, just ask.
