I'm curious to know what other solids, besides ice on water, float on
their liquid state?

Thanks!

Hello.

Reportedly, the same property can be seen in several substances other
than water.

" The open structure produced by the shafts accounts for the fact that
ice floats on its melt. This unusual property is also exhibited by
diamond, silicon, and germanium, 3 solids that are structurally
related to ice."

"So solid bismuth floats on its own melt like ice on water and expands
when crystallizing. This effect is furthermore only known from
water(ice), gallium and germanium."

search strategy:
"floats on its own"
"floats on its", melt

I hope this helps.

Thanks! Just what I needed. I feel bad for not being able to tip you,
but I'm a totally broke college student. E-mail me and I'll put you on
my christmas card list, though.
