Question ID: 207944
How do I view digital photo file type .amu? I can find no
confirmation that this file type even exists. I received a single
11Meg file of photos taken with an Olympus camera. Same person
earlier sent me JPEG files of other photos. She is ignorant of file
types & is no help. Photo editor tech support people say they never
heard of .amu files. None of my graphics apps will open the file.

It is not listed at http://filext.com. Are you sure the file was not
renamed? Have you tried changing the extension to different file types
(.jpg .tif etc) and trying to open it?

I can't change anything. It's a read-only file on a CD. Have not
been able to change the attribute.

Clarification of Question by mkman-ga on 25 May 2003 04:56 PDT
In fact, my apps do open the .amu file. But they only display ASCII
symbols, not photos. Changing the extension won't change that. There
is someting more here.

Thanks.

Hello mkman,

If this is an image file, you can identify which type by opening it in
a text editor. Since Notepad has a 64 KB limitation, and this is 11MB,
you need another editor. Wordpad may work, but often does not display
what we are looking for. Try Metapad (free) at
http://liquidninja.com/metapad/.

Now, when I open a jpg, regardless of the extension, I see the
following:

ÿØÿà JFIF H H ÿá
¦Exif II*
  	   ’ œ ¬ ´ (
  1 ¼ 2 Ð ˜‚
   ä i‡ ð ž FUJIFILM FinePix4900ZOOM H H Exif
Viewer Ver.1.1 2001:10:25 18:48:44

This is a jpg shot with my digicam as indicated by EXIF. PNG, TIF, etc
will all have an indication in the first few lines what the file is.

Try this and post the first few lines of the file here if it is not
obvious what type of image it is and I will help further if needed.

Do post your results.

Posted above using Wordpad. Metapad locks up, when I try to open my
file with it. Does that mean anything?

Thanks.

Hmm, not sure.

I do have to run to the airport, so will be gone a few hours, but here
is what I would do.

I'm SURE this is an image file that has been modified in a proprietary
program and has had header info changed. Microsoft "Picture It" does
this, for example.

First: Drag a copy to your hard drive. Rename as .jpg. If necessary,
right click, choose properties and uncheck "read only". Now double
click the file. If it does not open, most likely in your browser, then
proceed.

Open WORD. Drag the file into an open document. Any luck? If not try
the original extension, and .tif and .raw. No luck, proceed.

If you do not have a good image editing program, go to www.jasc.com
and download the demo of PaintShop Pro.

Now try opening this file with the original extension, .jpg, .tif and
.raw.

Let me know the results. I think one of those methods should get this
open for you.

Let me know what happens.

I'll check in 2 to 3 hours.

Tried it all. Variously get ASCII stuff, error message re format,
unresponsive red X (undisplayed image). It's my experience that an
app will open a compatible file, no matter what the extension.

Hmmm. At this point I can only suggest that you upload one of these
files somewhere where I can download it and see for myself what can be
done. I don't agree with programs opening files regardless of the name
of the extension. While that may happen sometimes, it just as often
does not.

Post if you can upload and I'm happy to give it my best shot.

Clarification of Question by mkman-ga on 26 May 2003 13:40 PDT
I can upload, but here's one more thought: Kathy's prior JPEGs were
around 550K per photo. This file @ 11Meg would only be 20 photos.
But she just told she sent about 60. Doesn't that mean this is a
compressed file? My googling turns up some cryptic stuff re Automated
Maintenance Utility (amu)& compression. Question then becomes how to
resize. No point in asking her help; she pleads ignorance.

Tell me where to upload, if you want the file.

Request for Question Clarification by clouseau-ga on 26 May 2003 14:39 PDT
Hmmm again. I was hoping you might have web server space where you
could upload this. I'm checking now for a free upload space so that I
can point you in the right direction. If I find somewhere free that
can handle that size file, I'll be back to post.

Geocities has a free account with 15MB. Try this:
http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/learn2/WhatYouGet4_Free.html

If you can upload it, make sure you set the permissions of the file so
I can download it and post the url here.

Ok, a friend has graciously offered a server for us to use.

FTP your file to the following:

Server: ftp.binaryheritage.com
Username: google
Password: answers1234

When done, post the file name here as a clarification. I will retrieve
it and then remove it from their server. And of course, let you know
what I find out as soon as I have had a chance to play with it.

I could not connect through a browser, but connecte deasily through an
FTP client. If you do not have one, I suggest the free version of
WS-FTP.

Just a quick note.

If you're using Internet Explorer, type this into the address bar:

...or just click on that link.

Hope this helps,

OK, file is uploaded; it's name is:

Passover 2003 Kaufman Family.amu

It's 11.6Mb.

Errol's syntax was the key to getting WS_FTP Upload Wizard to connect.
Thank you, Errol. After that, it was one step for the Wizard to
upload.

Good luck & thanks again to you Clouseau.

Ok, here is what I know:

1. It is not an image, but a collection of images in a proprietary
format. May well include thumbnails and be an html gallery type of
file, but will not open in a standard Windows browser even after all
common tricks have been applied.

2 .It was MOST LIKELY made on a Macintosh. One clue is the font used
in it is nimbussant, a font not at all common to Windows, but used in
programs such as Canvas 5

3. I have a hunch from a clue in the hx display of this file that it
may have been made with PhotoPage:

http://waves.apple.com:81/people/jav/PhotoPage.html

http://graphicssoft.about.com/library/daily/bldd012600.htm

That is all I can be sure of. Anything else is even more conjecture
than the above as I am a Windows guy and know just enough Mac to get
around.

I do have email out to one company that might be able to help further,
but my hopes are not high.

Sorry I could not provide more information for you.

File was created on a SONY machine. I believe Adobe photo shop was
used. Far as I know, Kathy doesn't own a Mac. I'll try to get her to
confirm all this.
Don't give up yet. We've gone this far. Price will move up if you
figure this out.

Thanks.

I'm still with you :)

It definitely was not done in Photoshop, nor can it be opened in
Photoshop.

Adobe has two other rather new programs called Elements and Album.
Album is a possibility, though the font choice should be a give-away
it was done on a Mac.

I'll check further. Do let me know what Kathy has to say.

Clarification of Question by mkman-ga on 28 May 2003 09:06 PDT
I sent Kathy an email to confirm hardware & software. I'll post her
answer when it arrives. Meanwhile, I'm almost 100% certain that she's
using a SONY PC, bought especially for its pre-installed photo editor.
So, I'm really waitng for the name of the editor. Why she's sent
JPEGS in the past, but not this time is part of the mystery.

Looking forward to her reply, MK.

AMU is not anything done by an Adobe program as far as I can tell. No
mention in any of their manuals or suport forums.

The other likely suspects have not yet replied to my emails.

Clarification of Question by mkman-ga on 28 May 2003 10:27 PDT
Kathy's answer:

File was made on Sony PC, Windows XP, using program that came on the PC
called Picture Gear Studio. If you can't work it out, I will go back to the
source documents and create a different file with Adobe photoshop -- I did
see the .amu file, but the individual pictures say they are in jpeg.

How interesting.

I couldn't find anywhere to download PhotoGear Studio, but a page I
found claims it is a rebundled PhotoVista application. This can be
downloaded here for 30 day trial - 20MB:
http://www.iseemedia.com/cgi-bin/support/downloads/dlform_new.pl?did=73&family=pv&desc=Photovista%203.0%20-%20Trial&sizeof=20.1MB&Platforms=Win

I did download it it, but it is one of those invasive programs that
installs a Java Virtual Machine and I don't care to risk the stability
of my system, so I cancelled the install.

You might wish to try it.

If not, check to see if Kathy made any panoramas in this amu file. If
so, this could be it. If not, still curious how it ver got an amu
extension.

-=clouseau=-

Clarification of Question by mkman-ga on 28 May 2003 13:15 PDT
Was that a typo? Kathy used Picture Gear Studio, not Photo Gear
Studio. Google has quite on lot on SONY & Picture Gear.

Also, please explain your last paragraph.

Also, doesn't her remark aabout individual JPEGs sound like amu is a
compression tool?

Thanks.

MK

Request for Question Clarification by clouseau-ga on 28 May 2003 14:05 PDT
Sorry for any confusion. Here is the clarification I miss posted as an
answer:

Yes, I did mean PictureGear which is supposed to be a repackaged
PhotoVista. This program (PhotoVista) is meant for stitching together
pictures to make panoramas. So, if that is what Kathy has done, then
do download and try the evaluation version of PhotoVista.

I still suspect that it is a slide viewer type of file or photo album.
If it were compressed, I think there would be more information
available on .amu and all that there seems to be is a mneu making
utility that is not what this file is.

Clarification of Question by mkman-ga on 28 May 2003 14:17 PDT
Clouseau,

Sounds like you've done all you can. Rather than download PhotoVista
(which sounds hazardous to your PC's health), I'll take up Kathy's
offer to redo the file with Adobe Photoshop.

If you'd like to declare my question answered, I won't object. Can't
imagine anyone coming up with an instant amu viewer, at this point.

Thanks.

Hello again mk,

Thank you for your kind offer to value the research I have done for
you on this. I wish I had a more definitive answer.

I did call Sony this morning and their customer service had nothing on
any of their bundled software creating a .amu file extension. Olympus
has not yet replied and Adobe also confirmed none of their products
use this extension as well.

As you might imagine, I am somewhat of a power user with my system and
always weigh risks when installing new software. I did not mean to
imply that PhotoVista Is hazardous, but since it does deal with some
core components, I would not like to risk the time that might be
required to restore my system to its previous state if it did
overwrite my Java Virtual Machine or other system files. Odds are it
would not be a problem, but it might. You might wish to try it, but
then again, the best solution is if Kathy can resend as jpgs.

I won't give up on this and if I do come across anything more or if I
get any interesting replies to my outstanding emails, I will post
again as comments and you will be notified of my new findings.

Best of luck getting to finally view these family photos!

Kind regards,

Drag and drop the file off the CD-ROM onto your hard drive. Then you
can remove the read-only attribute and change the file extension to
JPEG, et al as suggested earlier.

AMU is an unknown file extension. Which may possibly mean your friend
manually typed the extension accidentally (can happen to the best of
us when learning the ropes of something new). The fact that she sent a
good JPEG previously makes me think this could be the case.

I found two programs which use .amu:
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.infos3000.com/trucs/a.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522.amu%2522%2Bfile%2Bimage%26start%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN

I cannot find any image programs which use this format though and it's
difficult to know which of the following might be the actual MenuMaker
program that the above page refers to:

By changing file extensions, I have demonstrated that the right app
will open a .jpg file, no matter what it's called. Of course, Windows
won't make the association.

Since none of my image-opening apps won't open my .amu file, that
means the file is not one of the common image types. And changing the
extension will not help.

Then what will help me to open my mysterious .amu photo file?

Thanks.

Hi there,

Try copying the file to the Hard Drive, and rename it to something
common, see if you get a hit...
