How can I convert an XML file into tab-delimited text? Please note I
do not need to convert from tab-delimited text into XML. I have an
XML doc (only format that was available to me) and I need to convert
it to some kind of delimited text file.

Hi there, Daveamazon!

After many hours of looking through a Google search, I managed to find
a program which will do exactly what you need.

I have installed several program trials, most of which didn't work at
all, even Adobe InDesign 2.0 would not do the task that you needed.
The only one which did is called "ParseRat", a slightly tricky to use
application which does the job.
Download the trial from here: http://www.guysoftware.com/parserat.htm

The interface is very confusing and sometimes the text will be
obscured but the basic way to perform the operation is like this:

- Run the program
- Click OK on the username/password box
- Click the Open button on the top left
- Select your xml file
- Click the Output tab
- Select Tab Delimited
- Click the Output button on the top left
- Save as "filename.txt" (remember to include the .txt extension)

And that's it!
You will have to play with the settings a bit to make it perfect, you
can make it output the field names too if you would like to.

I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
errol-ga.

I have tried several times to get ParseRat to function correctly, so
far without success. It seems to import the XML file but will not
export the data correctly. Thanks for your research but I still need
a solution.

Hi there.

It worked fine for me.
I think there was a button called "copy all fields" that you have to
click on the bottom right first to copy the data to the output window
before you click the Output button.

errol-ga.

Couldn't find the "copy all fields" button.

Here is the actual XML file I'm trying to convert:

Hello there!

I successfully changed it into Tab Delimited text for you.
However, the file size limit for my GA Hotmail account is 1MB so I'll
have to post the URL here.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.s.mahoney/ga/products.txt (3.3MB)

And also, CSV & Excel:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.s.mahoney/ga/products.csv (3.3MB)
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/r.s.mahoney/ga/products.xls (1MB)

To convert the file, I simply used Excel (Office XP) which did a fine
job of the conversion.

Kind regards,
errol-ga.
