Dear patgrad,
If noone can come up with a store near you, I found two online mail
order stores:
New Jersey: 1.29/lb + 3.99 shipping: Argo Gloss Laundry Starch:
http://www.netgrocer.com/default.cfm?s=search_froogle&redirect=top_menus.cfm%3Fsend_store%3D5%26send_aisle%3D55%26send_section%3D574
Ohio: $1.59/lb, shipping unknown: Argo Laundry Starch:
http://www.kidrontc.com/ktcdee4.html
TWO RECIPES:
1) Starch:
1/4 cup of Cornstarch (add more for heavier application)
2 tablespoons of cold water
1 Quart of boiling hot water
Mix starch with cold water until dissolved. Add to the boiling hot
water. Mix thoroughly.

2) Spray Starch:
"Buy a box of Argo Gloss Laundry Starch and mix in the proportions
recommended in the instructions. Instead of dipping your clothes in
the mixture, let cool and drain into empty milk jugs or soda bottles.
Store these with your other laundry supplies. When it's time to iron,
shake the starch mixture thoroughly and pour into a plastic spray
bottle. (For best results, you may wish to heat the mixture again in
the microwave.) Spray onto you clothes and iron. I have found you can
get 10 to 15 bottles for the price of one can of commercial spray
starch (depending on how heavily starched you want your clothes). It
provides yet another way to recycle plastic jugs and bottles and
reduces the flourocarbons and pollution from canned spray starch."
