I am ruunning Windows XP Home. About 3 months ago I installed
a series of Kodak Software Programs including: Kodak Memory Albums;
Kodak Picture Transfer; Kodak One Touch to better pictures;and Kodak
Picture Software.
I now want to remove them all!
When I go to add/remove programs and click on the
first one mentioned: Kodak Memory Albums I get the following message:
*********************************************************************
"Error exptracting support files. The system cannot find the file
specified"
************************************************************************
***********************************************************************
With the other 3 programs I get this message:
"An installation support file could not be installed. The system
cannot find
the file specified"
**********************************************************************
The bottom line is I cannot remove these programs; at least one of
which
(I think) considerably slows down the speed of my "booting-up", and
the
performance of my computer. I invariably have to wait anything up to
60
seconds for a little "drop-down" advertisement about Kodak to appear;
after that I know I am right to proceed.
Lately I am finding Outlook Express has slowed to a crawl, and my
computer
is forever making fast "clicking" noises like it is looking for files
etc.
I must concede and admit I am a real "sucker" for buying and
downloading
software from "pop-up" adds on the net. If it says "speed up your
computer"
You can bet I'm like a kid in a lolly shop. I have zero resistance.
The question: How do I rid my computer of these Kodak Programs?
I have a total of 40 files associated with the Kodak Photo Programs I
am wanting to delete/uninstal.
I posted this question yesterdsay (Question ID 208128 )and was given
some some good advice,by sublim1-ga but it is far too complex and
lengthy for an old impatient "geezer" like me.
This morning I came up with my own idea, which I thought was
brilliant,
until it didnt work. The idea was to do a search on all files/folders
containingthe word "Kodak" Up came a listing of 40 files including
shortcuts.
I simply went to edit, clicked select all. They all got highlighted
and then
I commenced to drag them into my Recycle Bin. Ha! Ha! Brilliant I
thought!!!
Until when I let go of the "drag" to "drop"..........up came this
message:
"cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk"
Anybody got any ideas to quickly just dump/delete the lot of this
Kodak Stuff
Programs, pictures, files the lot.............I just want rid of it
all.
Surely there has got to be a quick/relatively easy way to do this.
To answer this question you have to give me step by step insturction:
1,2,3,4 ..5 or whatever. Thanks and kind regards from: Roger
Good tip for an answer that works! |

Roger...
Sorry if I went overboard in my answer yesterday, but I
wanted to give you an overview of what you're dealing with,
and help you remove the programs in the safest way
possible. The simplest way is, I believe, found in this
paragraph, in the middle of my answer.
"Another, perhaps simpler, option to uninstall the programs,
is to reinstall them to the exact location in which they are
currently located. This should reinstate the install.log file,
and this will allow you to use the Add/Remove programs utility
to uninstall them. Make sure you reboot after reinstalling the
programs, before proceeding with uninstalling them."
Unless you encounter some error, this method will account for
the fact that the files are in use, having been loaded by
Windows at startup.
So, simply:
1) Find your Kodak program installation CDs (let me guess:
you're on the road, using a notebook computer, and don't
have them with you).
2) Install the programs to the same location where they are
now located.
3) Reboot, as instructed.
4) Use Windows Add/Remove to uninstall the program you
just installed (Re-installing them should have eliminated
the missing file error you're getting now).
5) Reboot, as instructed.
6) Lather, rinse, repeat as needed.
If this isn't viable (due to not having the CDs, e.g.),
I'll be glad to trim the fat from my previous answer,
but certain steps can't be ignored, since the files
are being loaded by Windows at startup, and this must
be changed in order to delete them.
I await your response.

Hi Sublime1
You guessed it in one! Im on the road and dont the CD's with me.
Interestingly I actually bought all my Software CD's with me when
I left Australia in February. After paying excess baggage here and
there I eventually "lighten-up" and Yup...sent the CD's back home!
I cant even get them back cause they are in a import warehouse;
awaiting customs clearance. I apologise I did not get straight back
to you. You did a great job and gave me a profound answer. And it
is no fault of yours that my old "grey-matter" is not as good as it
used to me. I am relatively new to computers (a cuppla years now).
Always learning etc. But sometime I just like to take the line of
least resitance...like my "drag and drop idea". Not sure that you
know about that. But look everything is "sweet as". I am very
satisfied with your answer and would not have given you 5 stars
had I not been. On this occassion I am just hoping someone comes
up with something "simple" for me and easy to do (relatively easy to do).
Hope you understand and take no offence. Kind regards from: Roger

Hi AGAIN Sublime1
To make you feel a bit better let me add to my earlier comment.
I enjoyed your answer so much it made me "virtually-orgasmic"!
Truly, I just loved every bit of it. I envied your knowledge
and your ability to source the information you need to know.
And as I say it is no fault of yours that at this particular
point in time I am not able to apply fully all that you said.
One other little thing...to lighten my load when I sent my cd's
home I also sent my littl portable Brother Ink Jet printer. I
would normally use that to print out your lengthy instructions
and then "highlight"with a highlight pen the relevant steps.
This is how us old "geezers" survive in the world of high tech!
So without my faithful little printer I was handicapped even more.
Bottom line I absolutely loved your answer. Kind regards from: Roger

Hi again, Roger...
Okay, so you can't use the CDs to re-install and uninstall.
Please realize that, even if you delete these program files
and folders, you will still have entries in the registry
trying to find and load these files when Windows starts.
This could cause problems.
Let me at least get you where you want to be - with a faster
computer. You can always bookmark these questions and come
back to them later to finally uninstall the programs.
For now, we'll just keep them from loading and slowing Windows.
You can do this!!!
1) Go to and click on the 'Start' button.
2) Go to and click on 'Run'
3) Type 'msconfig' (no quotes) and click the 'Enter' key.
4) Click on the 'Startup' tab to the far right of the
window that came up.
5) Uncheck any item with the word 'kodak' in its name,
under the 'Startup Item' column.
6) Uncheck any item with the path C:\Program Files\Kodak
or any variation of Kodak, in the 'Command' column.
and
Uncheck any item with the path C:\PROGRA~1\Kodak
or any variation of Kodak, in the 'Command' column.
(You may have to place your mouse cursor on the line
at the right of the bar that says 'Command' and drag
it to the right, to expand the field of view a bit)
7) At the bottom of the same window, click 'Apply', then
click 'OK'. It will tell you you need to reboot.
Click 'OK', and let it reboot.
This will prevent the 'drop down' advertisement from Kodak
when Windows loads. It will speed up how fast Windows loads
and how fast your computer runs.
I'm being persistent with this because there is no simpler
way that may not cause additional problems down the road.
If you need clarification of any step or phrase, just post
one here. I'm home all day.

Thanks for your on-going help and support Sublime1
I am going to cut and paste your comments on to a word doc;
then rewrite them by hand (in so much as I have no printer).
So that I can follow them step by step.
I should mention that I am also being "ripped off" here in
Kingston being charged USD10.00 every single time I connect
to the internet and USD$.10 for every minute I am online at
this Kingston Hotel. And that's using my own computer!
It is starting to get late. So I will have some dinner soon
and attend to all of this later or in the morning. Once I have
implimented all of your suggestions I will post another small
priced question just for you to let know how I got on for
increasing speed etc. I am a bit concerned that this question
is now "open" again and was previously "locked" for a couple of
hours. A bit of "dayJarVoo" from yesterday. Somebody else hit
a brick wall! (I suppose) I dont know whether to leave it open
or close it??
What do you reckon Sublime1?? It will cost me another ten bucks
to connect again and check, but I will do that in another hour or
so to see if you are still at your post, and/or if you have
made any suggestion as to leaving this thread open or closed.
Kind regards from : Roger
