Greetings Scott:
There are a few places to easily locate the data you seek at no cost
to you. I'm not certain if the information can be downloaded from
these sites and you might inquire at each to see if database files are
available for download. However, all the data you seek is free and
may be found among the following:
GeoHive
Beginning at http://www.xist.org/reg/index.php, you can see the
world in regions and within each region you can view the countries.
From each country, you may view the divisions of the country and the
capitol cities.
InfoPlease
Here you'll find a list of all the countries in the world. From
each country, you'll see a page of statistics that include the capitol
cities *and* the largest cities in each country.
http://www.infoplease.com/countries.html
Countries of each continent
Listed below are the names of each continent and the countries
within them. The main page is
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/world_population.htm
Africa
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/africa.htm
the Americas
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/america.htm
Aisa
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/asia.htm
Europe
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/europe.htm
Oceania
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/oceania.htm
In addition, an interesting site I ran across that I thought you might
enjoy is the 2002 CIA World Factbook at
http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/ I didn't know the CIA
had such a website.
Should you require clarification of any of the links or information I
have provided, please request it and I'll be happy to respond.

Hi journalist-ga, thanks for the info but it was not quite as I
needed. I really need the lists to be related, as I will be loading
the information into a relational database. i.e for the city "San
Francisco" I need to see that it relates to the state "California",
which in turn relates to the country "USA" which relates to the
continent "North America".
I need more than the capitals for each state, I want all of the main
cities in each state.
do you know of anything?

Greetings again Scott:
The InfoPlease link above - http://www.infoplease.com/countries.html -
*does* list the largest cities. See a sample at
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0108078.html and look in the lavender-
shaded area to find:
"Capital and largest city (2000 est.): London, 11,800,000 (metro.
area)
Other large cities: Birmingham, 1,009,100; Leeds, 721,800; Glasgow,
681,470; Liverpool, 479,000; Bradford, 477,500; Edinburgh, 441,620;
Manchester, 434,600; Bristol, 396,600"
Also, my colleague Secret901 posted a good source below. From there
you will discover:
http://www.world-gazetteer.com/home.htm - This drills down from
country to state/province to capitals of each and, when applicable,
there are other large cities listed.
In addition, I executed more searches and visited numerous sites
today. From those, I located
http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/eu.htm (see across top of
page for the other continents). It lists continents, countries, and
largest cities. For instance, choosing Sweden from the Europe map
produced http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/europe/se.htm and
then there is a link on that page to major cities at
http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/europe/ciamaps/se.htm -
this should work for your needs as well. The start page begins at
http://www.worldatlas.com/geoquiz/thelist.htm
Another is http://www.worldskip.com/ and it offers the same -
continents, countries, states/provinces and largest cities of each.
However, it costs $1 a month ($12 a year) for a subscription to the
database. Sample pages are available for view - see the sign up page
at https://commerce35.datapipe.com/worldskip/registration.asp?accessdenied=%2Fregion%2Easp%3FPartnerID%3D%26RegionID%3Dse
and click on the screenshot of "country information" to see the
presentation of facts. You'll see "Largest Cities" present. Also see
http://www.worldskip.com/company/index.shtml for information about the
site.
Should you require clarification of any of the additional links or
information I
have provided, please request it and I'll be happy to respond.

Hi again Journalist-ga... regarding your clarification, the additional
sites still do not provide what I am looking for. They do not have the
state/province/region level in the heirarch. It is not enough for me
to have Continent/Country/Largest Cities. I need
Continent/Country/State/Major Cities. In the original question I also
asked that the info be downloadable in lists, so that I can load to
database. The sites you have provided would mean manual cutting and
pasting, and this would take a lifetime.
The links from Secret901-ga and Kyrie26-ga get me closer, but still
not there as the places are not the english placenames.
Once again I need lists of the heirarchy Continent/Country/State/City
where the cities are the major cities (plural) in each state of the
country. The placenames need to be the english placenames.
Your thoughts??

It appears that a downloadable database as you request is not
available. I equated the term "largest cities" with "major cities"
and I apologize for the error. How would you like me to proceed from
here?

Hi Journalist-ga - I understand. If you are convinced that there are
no such lists out there then why don't you tell me what you think is
fair in terms of the time you have put in? I appreciate your help, but
don't feel that I got what I was looking for. Your thoughts?

The fee is entirely up to you. I have over 2 hours invested in
searching and examining links. If you wish to seek a refund, I will
also understand. I found the sources but not the download and I
searched with the word download with other keywords before returning
just now to respond. I'll respect whatever decision you make.
