I am a private individual looking for a good web storage and transfer
service. There's many listed on Google Directory (link below), but
it's difficult to browse them all and evaluate each one.

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Web_Applications/Virtual_Disk_Drives/Commercial/

Must have the following features:
* Approx 1GB storage for less than $50 per year
* Accessible through a web browser (I.E. Latest) without installation
of additional software
* Basic security (at least not freely posted on the WWW)
* Max single filesize of no less than 15-20MB

Desireable but not essential features:
* Drag and drop interface
* Email links to selected files (to send very large attachments)
* Email upload/download path
* Well known company
* Upgradeable storage limits
* Fastmail.fm style raw efficiency

Acceptable limits and issues:
* Bandwidth/transfer limitations
* Lack of system backup

I have seen some services, but for $200-400 per year. Given the
current price of portable HDDs, flash devices, and web hosting, that's
rediculous.

Based on my preferences above, can you recommend a good service, or
provide links to recent (or still valid) reviews?

spurious-ga,

Would CryptoHeaven work for you?

Potentially, yes. My only concern is the cost. 40MB ar $2.42/m works
out at nearly US$30 per year or $726/GB/yr. Whereas, my web host
offers 330MB for under US$40 or $121/GB/yr in a password protected
directory. It's intended for web hosting, but it should be indicative
of prices. From my original question, I am targetting $50/GB/yr or
thereabouts. I believe CryptoHeaven's competitors offer storage at
$200-$400/GB/yr.

I'll accept CryptoHeaven if you can tell me it offers good value for
money or is somehow superior to its peers.

From the Sponsored Link "Top 10 Web Hosting Review" above, I found
Infinology

http://www.webhosting-reviews.com/redirect.php?id=id1

Infinology offers 9GB and a bunch of other features for US$6.95/m or
$9.27/GB/yr. Again, it's not a web storage service, but it shows that
my US$50/GB/yr target is not unreasonable.

There are a lot of great websites that make searching for a host MUCH
easier. I would suggest a site like hostpulse.com. I list my hosting
services at hostpulse, and you can search by price, storage space, and
bandwidth (I think). I wish I could tell you about my hosting services
(they'd be a good fit), but you can find a bunch of other great hosts
in the search.
