I have a long list of telephone numbers in a text file. Is it possible
to print it in small letters, possibly in multiple columns, so as to
fit it on a minimum number of pages?

Yes, it is possible. What program are you using, and what other word
processing programs do you have on your computer?

How many columns are there in your list? If possible, could you tell
us how many characters per column (letters in your column) are there?

Since you have Excel, I would import the text file into Excel, move
the numbers into multiple columns, and then print using the "fit to
one page" feature (or several pages if there are just too many
numbers).

To import the text file into Excel, open Excel and go to Data -> Get
External Data -> Import Text File. The Text Import Wizard will come
up. You probably want to choose Delimited for the first option if the
numbers are listed one line at a time, or separated by a comma or
similar punctuation mark. So choose delimited and click Next. Then
you must pick what character you want to use for a delimiter. If the
numbers are separated by "carriage returns" (one line at a time), then
choose Tab. Otherwise, chose the character that separates the numbers
(like a comma). The data preview will show you if you're on the right
track. Click Next. The Format part of the wizard should be fine.
You just want the General format. Click Finish. You may have to tell
the Wizard what cell you want to import the data into. Once you've
done that, you should be able to move the numbers into columns that
fit the screen well. Once you've done this, you're ready to print.

To make them fit to one page, go to File -> Page Setup. Under
"Scaling", chose the option to Fit to 1 page wide by 1 page tall. If
this makes the text too impossible to read, you can play with these
numbers until the pages are readable. This will let you shrink the
numbers into the smallest amount of space possible. You can also
decrease the margins to fit more numbers on the page by going to the
Margins tab and changing them all to .25

Good luck, I hope this helps. The tip about using a pixel friendly
font is a good one as well. Might help the readability at a small
font. Arial is a good one to use otherwise.

I would suggest you find a font commonly referred to as a 'pixel
font', for printing clear tiny text.
