Researching Incetive Pay Systems that managed care organizations and
PBMs are using to increase generic utilization. What MCOs and PBMs are
doing it? What does their Incentive Schedule and Program Information
look like? How widespread is this practice? Are there regional
differences? Fee listed is for a good, well-researched answer to
these questions. A good answer will not only get the fee, but the
opportunity to do follow-up research as well. |

Hello Davemtm,
Your question is intriguing. I have previously researched physician
pay and incentive systems, and wish to help. Would you consider
splitting this into multiple postings, as you have listed four
individual questions here, each of which can take some investigating.

I understand what you are saying. How about we drop off the last two
questions and focus on the first two? In finding out which Health
Plans and PBMs have these specific types of programs*, I think one
could get the answers to the second question at the same time. How
about we just focus on the first two questions and drop the second
two?
*to further clarify I only want info on programs involving physician
incentives/bonuses based on their percentage of prescriptions that are
filled with generics.
That sound fair? I'm also not looking for the "big report" to start,
just a list of Health Plans and PBMs (the four biggies are enough)
that have these programs and any details you can get at the same time
regarding the actual incentive program. (The larger fee project I
referred to earlier would be to do the big report.)
Final note: if Google Answer Researchers only research what is posted
on the Web, I don't think you'll be successful. I learned of one plan
that is currently doing a program like this and went to their web site
and not surprisingly they do not have any information regarding that
on their site. I think this project will take more ingenuity than a
Google search! ;-)

Hello davemtm-ga,
Thank you for your refinement and clarification of the question. I
have an encouraging start with initial information and further leads
that I believe are on track. One question I have for you is whether
you are interested in incentive plans only with regard to physicians
or for pharmacies too?
I think you will be glad to know that I do not rely only on what is
posted on the web, but rather use a much wider range of research
methods and information sources.

Dear VitalMed,
You're right, I am encouraged! I'll gladly double the fee if you want
to pull the same information together for pharmacy-focused programs.
Not sure it will be of value for my immediate needs, but I am a fair
guy and this seems like a good way to further compensate you for the
work you're doing. I appreciate it and look forward to getting your
answer. If you need anything else, let me know. Also, for this phase
of the research, focus on building the best possible, most accurate
list of health plans/managed care organizations/large employers who
are actually compensating/incenting physicians for their generic
utilization rates. If you get the program details at the same time,
great we need that. But the bigger the list (with or without full
program details) the better for now. Hope this helps, Dave

Hello Davemtm-ga,
Okay. I am not sure only whether you are asking primarily for "the big
four" as the previous message reads, or "the best possible, most
accurate list..." according to the recent message. I easily understand
your wanting as much information as possible, but I appreciate if you
could clarify.

The "big 4" refer to the four largest PBMs. Odds are the Generic
Utilization Incentive Programs are coming from the health plans /
managed care organizations of which there are many. So let's say Medco
is the PBM supporting the program, it could come to physicians as an
incentive from any one of the hundreds of health plans/MCOs that use
Medco as their PBM.
That help?
