I cannor remember details as I was only in 1st or 2nd grade at the
time (and I am 80 years old now) but I do remember we lived at 25 s.
Central Pk, Chicago. and my father was gone...kidnapped..for about 2
days...returned unharmed but he would Never talk about it...he had
a"bookie" on west Madison Ave and it might be somehow a mafia
doing...and it was a story in the Chicago Tribune, I think the front
page. This had to be during the school year of 1927 or 28...I recall
police men in the apartment and my mother very upset.

Chicago March 15 (AP)

Summary of article:

Joseph B. Drell was kidnapped by three men from his car after driving
his two children to school. He was known as one of Chicago’s
wealthiest bookmakers. He was held captive for nine hours and was set
free after a ransom of $50,000 was paid.

Drell insisted that no ransom had been paid but police lieutenant Phil
Carroll in charge of the investigation believed Drell’s associates
were able to raise the money as they usually had large sums of money
on hand for race track wagers.

The police believed that the motive of the kidnapping was gang
vengeance because in August 1927 there was a hold up in one of Drell’s
locations where one robber was killed and three were captured.

At the Chicago Tribune website I located the following FAQ:

How do I get reprints of a photo that appeared in The Chicago Tribune?
You may request a photo reprint (from 1847-present) by contacting:
    Sandy Spikes
    312-222-3056
    435 North Michigan Ave
    Chicago, IL 60611
    Email: sspikes@tribune.com
NOTE: The cost is $25-$80 for private use per photo. All photo
reprints are subject to availability.
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/chicagotribune/main/faq.html#areprints

I then wrote to Sandy Spikes at the Chicago Tribune asking for article
and photo reprints.

She replied to my email with the following message:

“We sell page reproductions dating back to 1847, but you must know the
date, section and page number of the page you are ordering. I can fax
or mail you an order form. The cost is $45.95.”

“You can also view the pages on microfilm at the Chicago Historical
Society at 312-642-4600.”

Given that you believe the article appeared on the front page of the
Tribune and with the exact dates you now have, I recommend that you
get in touch with Sandy Spikes and order the page reproductions. The
Chicago Historical Society is a good lead as well in order to view the
Chicago Tribune on Microfilm.

Best Regards,
