I am using Netscape 7.0 with multiple users. Is there a way to specify
on the command line of a Windows shortcut that the browser open up
with a specific user (thus bypassing the dialogue box that opens up
asking me to choose a user profile)?

Hi carl5219-ga,

You can achieve your desired result by doing the following:

1. Create a copy of your current Netscape shortcut
2. Right click on this copy and select properties
3. In the Target field you should see something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe"
4. Keep everything within the double quotes, and add a profile switch
like this:
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe" -P
"profile_name_here"

Note: You may have other switches in your original target, and it is
fine if you just add the profile switch to the end.

You may be interested in some of the other switches available with the
Netscape command:

netscape "command line"

If you have any problems with the information above please post a
clarification and I will respond promptly.

Cheers!

Hi again,

It looks like the switch command wrapped awkwardly...here it is again:

"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe" -P "profile_name"

There’s nothing I can really add to what answerguru-ga has quite
already quite adequately provided to you but I already had this so
I’ll go ahead and serve it up to you.

Here’s how it was done with Netscape 6 and I really can’t see what
would prevent you from doing the same thing with the newer release.
Netscape 7 hasn’t been around that long and many of the tips and
tricks are just now being published but I recommend you try this with
7 and see if it does the trick:
BO’S NETSCAPE
http://www.uninet.net/~blaisdel/netscapeaid.htm#launch%20ns%20with%20profile

“Q) How to I launch Netscape 6 automatically with a particular
profile? I don't like having to choose each time.

A) Create a copy of the shortcut to Netscape 6 and modify the command
line so that the target path (which points to netscp6.exe) is followed
by -P then the name of the profile. For example, if Netscape 6 was
installed into C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\netscp6.exe your
target would be changed to:

“C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\netscp6.exe" -P profilename

Where "profilename" is obviously the name of the profile you want to
launch with. The quotes are necessary around the full path of
netscp6.exe if it contains spaces. The quotes do not surround the
parameters afterwards (-P profilename). Note that these command-line
parameters can be combined with any others you'd like to use.”

A Mozilla help page I found seems to confirm that this method will
work if done correctly. You should modify the instructions above to
fit the command below where necessary (i.e, substitute netscp6.exe
above with netscp.exe as shown below, or whatever):
MOZILLA 1.0+ AND NETSCAPE 7 HELP AND TIPS
http://techaholic.net/ns7.html#012

“How to start Netscape 7 using a specific Profile:

Add -p "ProfileName" (including the dash) to the Netscape 7 executable
file name (Netscp.exe):

"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -p "ProfileName"

To do this right-click on the Netscape 7 icon, click Properties and
add -p "ProfileName" at the end of the .EXE filename.”

You can read more discussion from clever people like yourself who are
also seeking to simplify the use of Netscape profiles.
