Hi there,

There are anywhere between 535,695 and 5.03 million gay men in the
USA, as best as anyone can work out.

Between 8-10% of gay males are currently HIV positive.

Between 160,882 and 183,671 men are living with AIDS acquired via male
to male sex. The percentage of gay men depends on the definition of
gay. If it is "more same-sex than opposite-sex partners since age 18"
then the percentage of gay men living with AIDS is between 4.8% and
5.51%.

Here are the statistics and sources:

Gay men in the USA
------------------
The percentage of male Americans who are gay is open to debate and
definition. Most unbiased statistics are inaccurate due to the
unwillingness of some people to be open about their sexuality.

The best over view on the topic that I found is:

Demographics of the Gay and Lesbian Population in the United States:
Evidence from available Systematic Data.
(Center for Policy Research)
http://www-cpr.maxwell.syr.edu/cprwps/pdf/wp12.pdf

They present these statistics:

Gay Men by Definition of Homosexuality

1. At least one same-sex partner since age 18 4.7%
2. More same-sex than opposite-sex partners since age 18 3.1%
3. Exclusively same-sex sex partners over the last year 2.5%
4. Exclusively same-sex sex partners over the last five years 2.6%
5. Self-identified gay 0.5%

What is the population of gay men in the US?
--------------------------------------------
According to the CIA Factbook, in July 2002 the USA has an estimated
population of 92,391,120 men aged between 15-64, and 14,748,522 over
65 - a total of 107,139,642 adult men.
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html

Depending on the criteria used for gay, the best available statistics
suggest that there are:

1. At least one same-sex partner since age 18 5.03
million
2. More same-sex than opposite-sex partners since age 18 3.32
million
3. Exclusively same-sex sex partners over the last year 2.68
million
4. Exclusively same-sex sex partners over the last five years 2.78
million
5. Self-identified gay 535,
695

What % of these men are HIV+?
-----------------------------
"About 8 percent of gay men have HIV, the government estimates."
CBS News, Sept 2000
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/09/14/national/main233619.shtml

This study, which I think is biased because it focuses on men who are
likely to be more promiscuous than the average gay male, suggests that
10% of gay American men are HIV positive:

"The study involved 5,719 men who were interviewed at dance clubs,
bars and other places frequented by gays in Baltimore, Dallas, Los
Angeles, Miami, New York City and Seattle. It tested the men for
exposure to the AIDS virus, finding that 573 had H.I.V."

What % of these men have been diagnosed with AIDS?
--------------------------------------------------
In 2001 there were an estimated 183,671 gay men in the USA living with
AIDS.

"Despite significant declines in HIV infection rates among MSM since
the early years of the epidemic. MSM continue to be the group at the
highest risk for HIV, accounting for an estimate 42% of all new
infections in the United States (CDC, 2000). Young MSM, African,
African American MSM, and Latino MSM are at particular high risk for
HIV infection. In recent study of young MSM in seven U.S. cities, more
than one in ten young MSM were HIV infected, with infection rates of
15% among young Latino MSM, and of 30% among young African American
MSM (Valleroy, 2001)."
http://www.avert.org/gaystata.htm

Dec 2001: Of the 282,250 men (of 13 years or older) who were living
with AIDS,
57% were men who had sex with men (MSM). [this equals 160,882]
http://www.avert.org.uk/statsum.htm

In 2001 the estimated number of men in the USA living with AIDS, with
the exposure category being "men who have sex with men (MSM)" is
162,151.

Various Other Statistics
------------------------
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that
850,000 to 950,000 U.S. residents are living with HIV infection,
one-quarter of whom are unaware of their infection.

Of new infections among men in the United States, CDC estimates that
approximately 60 percent of men were infected through homosexual
sex...

As of the end of 2001, an estimated 362,827 people in the United
States were living with AIDS.

adult males (.028%)

60% of new male HIV cases in 2000 were via MSM.
