I'm trying to find a computer game I player a number of years ago, but
cannot for the life of me remember the title. The parts of the game I
remember are as follows:
1- You play as a helicopter pilot. The view is not first person, but
rather above and behind your helicopter.
2- It is shoot-em-up action and NOT a flight sim.
3- Most of the time, when not firing upon military targets and dodging
other helicopters and their fire, you are navigating the terrain. It
is very mountainous, and the entire game plays as if you are in a
canyon. The canyon floor is greenish- and there are trees and various
scenery around you can fire on. The sky in the distance goes to black.
Occasionally you emerge into an open area, and that is where you do
most of the shooting.
4- You are given a certain cache of bullets at the begin of each
mission, and you can pick up more by blowing up storehouses. You can
lock onto targets.

5- I played this game at least five years ago, so it couldn't possibly
have come out after 1998.
6- The entire game is played as the chopper. There are no first-person
segments or something like that.

I believe the game you are talking about may be EXTREME ASSAULT. This
game came out around 1997 and features everything exactly as you have
mentioned. I used to play this game quite a bit and found it extremely
enjoyable. I even got to talk to the team that worked on this game
back when it first came out as I was working for a website that did
reviews and things of that nature. The only thing that varies from
your description is that you also get to drive some other vehicles in
this game such as tanks and what-not, so this still might not be it.

Of course, another possibility is the JUNGLE STRIKE / DESERT STRIKE
game series. DESERT STRIKE is set in a desert backdrop and JUNGLE
STRIKE in the jungle/mountains, but they are almost identical to
gameplay and made by the same team. These games are older (1992/1993)
so they don't feature 3D cutting edge graphics and were DOS based.

Could it possibly be Sierra Online's 3D Helicopter Simulator? That's a
bit older than the other games mentioned, released in the mid 80's.

jarred your memory enough so that you recalled the name of the game?
If one of us guessed the right title, we'd like to close out the

I am not sure about the legality of downloading games that are no
longer being distributed by the companies in question. I do know that
some companies change their software to freeware, but we could inquire
about specifics once we find the game you are looking for.

The game that came to mind immediately was a game I remember as having
the executible file as Chopper2.exe This game matches almost
everything you described, but only if you are able to shoot through
the mountains with missles. You could also "shoot" your way into the
credits on the far left of the game. I am not sure about the looking
onto targets though, this is not something that I remember. NOTE: The
game I am talking about is very old.

the only game i remember that sounds similar to that was DESERT
STRIKE, you had several different missions and viewed the chopper from
a diagonal perspective.

I had a game called Apache Longbow, sounds very much like your game;
but I cannot remember many details from it...

I THINK that me and my friend used to play a lot of Apache Longbow,
round his house because he had a DX2/66 and I had a mere sx-25. :-(

It doesn't sound like the game you're after, if I remember rightly it
was an updated version of Gunship 2000, which was DEFINITELY a flight
sim, which you're not after.

Apache Longbow was a "shoot-them-up" game, but I think it was more of
a desert without trees...
