Hello barrie:
Thanks for the fascinating question. I have found several references
to the Borg Warner T5 gearbox being fitted to TVR models. As far as
finding a hard and fast max power rating, that seems to depend
somewhat on how the gearbox is installed and what other modifications
have been performed on the car. However, there is some consistency in
the numbers that I found.
The closest I was able to find to a "manufacturer's detailed
specifications" was at:
The TVR Tuscan Challenge Car
URL: http://www.birdshill.fsnet.co.uk/car.htm
Max Power: 460 bhp @ 6750 rpm
Max Torque: 380 lb/ft @ 5500 rpm
Some information on "newer" TVR conversions can be found at:
TVR Tuscan - Road Legal Conversion
URL: http://www.pistonheads.com/tvr/tuscanracer/conversion.htm
Max Power: 420 bhp
Max Torque: 350 lb/ft
However, Glebe Engineering Ltd. in the UK has "designed and developed
a straight cut gearkit for the Borg Warner T5" that gives even greater
performance:
T5 Straight Cut Gearkit
URL: http://www.glebe.co.uk/dev.htm
Max Power: 500 bhp
Max Torque: 465 lb/ft
So, I would have to say that if you are willing to put the money into
a special gearkit, it can withstand up to 500 bhp and 465 lb/ft.
I hope this information helps with your research.

Thanks for prompt reply.
I also managed to get information from Glebe.
The other two answers relate to the engine output and performance and
not the cabability of the T5 box.
In order to help, I have an engine that produces 470lbs/ft of torque
it is my belief that the T5 box is not capable of withstanding such
power (unless it has had the conversion done by Glebe,it has not).
This is the reason I am searchng for the manufacturers spec of the
gearbox which I will hope will provide a definitive and accurate power
rating.
Kind Regards
Barrie

Hi barrie:
Thanks for the clarification request. I've done some further sluething
(and phone calling) and I have sent an email to the company currently
responsible for that product line. I'm hoping to have an answer soon -
but since it is late on Friday, it is likely an answer won't come
until next week.
I'll keep you informed of any and all updates.

Thanks for your reply and help. I look forward to hearing the results.
I have also found out That a company in Sheffield, called Wedge
Automotive supply TVR transmissions, I will call them this morning, or
first thing Monday to see if the can provide any relevant info.
Further, I have also made contact with a mechanic who deals regularly
with Glebe and I hope that I will be able to discuss the matter with
them. As we know they have been comissioned by TVR to upgrade the T5
box, and have been successful in doing so, I am hoping that they will
have kept a record of all gearbox serial numbers that have had the
upgrade and that mine will either be on the list or not, one way or
the other I will then be closer to having a more precise ID on my box
and therefore its capabilities. I have also Emailed TVR direct and
have provided them with the serial numbers, I await their response.I
ll keep you informed of any progress, good luck.
Kind Regards
Barrie.

I have spoken to Both Wedge and Glebe. They are neither in a position
to help save for the fact that it is clear that Glebe have not uprated
my box(approx. £4000). However I have spoken to Steel wheels (american
parts and accessory importer)They have offered to help by contacting
the manufacturor on my behalf. I have provided them with all the
serial numbers. However Charles at steel Wheels is absolutely certain
that no T5 box ever made would stand the power produced by my
engine, further, contained within the steel wheels brochure is a HEAVY
DUTY T5 box;its max torque capacity is published at 330lbs/ft. I now
await for the cooperation of steel wheels and the willingness of the
manufacturor to provide the details (14Days) is the estimated time.
Cheers

Hi barrie:
Here's what I've found out.
The T5 gearbox product line was sold by Borg Warner some years ago to
a company called Transmission Technologies Corporation. (I got this
information by calling Borg Warner directly.)
TTC
URL: http://www.ttcautomotive.com/
I contacted them at their technical support email,
tech@ttcautomotive.com, and got the following reply today:
**************************
The T5 is usually rated below 325 ft.lbs. Very few are rated above
that
level. Most of the information needed would be your vehicle weight.
Jon
**************************
So, if you want to pass along your vehicle weight (either through me,
or on your own), we could do that. However, it looks like - unless
your gearbox has been modified - it'll never handle 470 ft.lbs.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :-(

Hi barrie:
Received this quick response to the weight information:
********************************
As previously stated, the highest torque capacity for the T5 is 325, most of
them are in the 275-300 range.
