Hello grandpa3689,

I believe there are two possibilities:

I believe that either you do not have the codec installed that is
needed or the video is itself corrupted.

If the video is available for download, you might want to try
redownloading it as something may have happened while downloading.

You can easily check if it is the player by
(1) Clicking on the Start Button
(2) Clicking Run...
(3) Typing in: mplayer2.exe
(4) Dragging the file onto the player to see if you get a similar
error.

The more likely problem is that the file is corrupt. The error message
sounds like a DivX corrupt file error. You can easily check this by
downloading this application and "checking" the file:
http://divfix.maxeline.com/index.php?target=showdoc&docid=355

The program will attempt to fix the file, but might not be able to. If
the file is not a divx file, you might just need to install the proper
codec. In this case, I recommend you install the Nimo Codec Pack which
will install all the codecs you could ever need. You can download it
here:

http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?file=Nimo50Build9Beta1.exe
http://www.land.ee/d_nimo_codec.html (alert: this link may have
popups)

I hope this answer will help you solve the problem. Please let me know
if you run into any additional problems, or if you need any
clarification. I will respond ASAP.

While it is difficult to determine the cause of the error you mention,
it is likely that you either downloaded the wrong version of Media
Player 9 (probably the xp version) or it did not install properly. It
is also possible that you have a version of Windows 98 previous to the
Second Edition (In this case you need Media player 7.1).

If you DID NOT download the new Media Player version by selecting the
Windows Update button OR by going to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, I suggest that you remove the
Windows Media player using Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove
Programs->Select the Windows Media Player 9 Series->Select the
Add/Remove button.->Continue with the uninstallation.

Then, point your browser to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Select Scan for Updates. Browse through the updates and find the Media
Player. The media player listed will be the lastest version that is
compatible with your system. After following these procedures, you
still might need to download codec updates which may or may not
download automatically depending on the exact type of video file.

The comment on downloading the wrong version seems to be the probable
cause but what else would you expect from a 67 year old no brainer.I
did have an earlier version om Media Player so I will take your advice
and get rid of my mistake and download 7.1.Thanks for all the help as
I should have realised that while my son has XP thats of no use to me.

Thanks for your detailed answer.I think that you have cracked it.My
daughter received the same video from her brother and had no
problems.I obviously need to download the codec file you mentioned to
enable me to view the video. Will do this tonight and let you know.
