Question ID: 211057
With my older computer, I used WIN 98SE with IE6; with my newer
computer I have installed WIN 2000 with IE6.

No problems so far but my ISP now tells me that they don't support IE6
with anything other than WIN XP because MS haven't supplied them with
diagnostic tools.

Moreover, they have A LOT of customers who've experience horrific
problems because of the combination.

Is this true?

And, if so, what should I do next?

Regards

PB

Hi Probonopublico!

My suggestion would be to revert back to IE 5.5 via the Add/Remove
Programs and then install Mozilla [ http://www.mozilla.org ] to use as
your everyday browser.
Then, when you need help from technical support you can say that you
have IE 5.5 and they will be able to fix your problem because all
browsers on one system will share various internet settings which
could cause a problem such as DNS.

Hope that helps,
errol-ga.

Hi, Errol

Great idea!

Many thanks.

Actually the Tech Support desk for my ISP (they're in Wales would you
believe?) told me that the ONLY way to remove IE6 was to re-format the
Hard Disk ... which seems rather drastic.

However, I won't mention the ISP by Name Today Luckily.

Kindest regards

Bryan

I've had a few computers with that combination before, and it worked
fine. My current machines run win2k with either IE 5.0 or IE 5.5, but
IE6 works just as well.

By the way, the reasoning of your isp to reformat the hard drive first
and ask questions later is because it makes their job much easier, at
the expense of much effort on your part. Depending on how you
installed internet explorer, it is very possible you can uninstall it
without reinstalling windows, let alone reformatting the hard drive.
