I've been unable to find a supermarket or specialty butcher shop in
the Jacksonville, FL metro area that carries USDA prime beef cuts.
While I realize that numerous mail order houses ship such beef all
over the country, I'd like to find a local source. My online research
has resulted in zero hits on this subject, all references to prime
beef being limited to that served in upscale restaurants. |

You will be the second researcher to tackle this question. The first
(hummer) provided me with the names of several meat retailers in the
Jacksonville area, but, when I called them, I learned that none
carried USDA prime beef. It may well be that prime beef cuts are not
available in NE Florida at retail outlets, but only on the menus of
upscale steak houses (e.g., Ruth's Chris). For more insight into this
issue, see www.ochef.com/191.htm. I have emailed the Florida
Cattlemen's Assoc, but no response yet.

Just recd following response from the Florida Beef Council:
Good Morning,
I don't know of any outlets for Prime beef in your area. However, if
you have a specialty butcher shop in St. Augustine or the Jacksonville
area, you may find it there.

Just had a long conversation with the gen mgr at Ruth's Chris steak
house in Jacksonville, and he said he'd never seen a cut of USDA prime
beef in a Florida market or butcher shop in the 15 years he'd lived
here. He said only 2% of the beef raised in America is prime and that
it's available only in restaurants such as Ruth's Chris or in upscale
markets in major cities that are near beef producing areas. I have the
sense that I'm at the end of the road here and that it's probably not
worth your researching the issue any further.
