Hello garyz-ga,
I've found some interesting items below. I did include a web tribute
from the Ringling bros. site in case you had not seen it. Other items
include an image from the Library of Congress, book titles, and
article citations. I am unable to include the full-text of the
articles because of copyright, but one includes an abstract. You
should have little difficulty obtaining these items (books and
articles)through your local library.
Please submit a clarification request if you have questions concerning
the information I've included here. I want google answers customers to
be satisified with this service. Included at page bottom is my google
search strategy.
Thanks,

Books
Bradna, Fred. THE BIG TOP:My Forty Years With The Greatest Show On
Earth. : New York, Simon and Schuster, 1952.
<http://cec.chebucto.org/Books/CircBook.html>
By Fred Bradna & Hartzell Spence. A biography of Fred Bradna,
the
Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey ringmaster from 1913 to
1946. *(This is one of the finest circus histories with
wonderful
first-hand descriptions of many legends, including Lillian
Leitzel
& Alfred Codona, the Concellos, clowns Lou Jacobs & Otto
Griebling,
the Wallendas, bandmaster Merle Evans, and others. There are
great
photos, some of which apparently have not been published
before or
since. Detailed are the hazards of circus life. There were
tent
blowdowns, travelling troubles, dangers of living with wild
animals
and so on. He pulls no punches about the 1944 circus tent fire
in
Hartford, Connecticut that burned hundreds of people, mostly
children.
Many of the acts were extremely dangerous, making it exciting
for
the audience, but it sometimes resulted in tragedy and death
for
the performers. The Ringling show had very few ringmasters
over
the years. To have held that post and hold the show together,
night after night and year after year, was quite an
achievement.
This book would be a fine addition to any circus buff's
collection.)
