Hi al_hgs:

Thanks for the interesting question.

There certainly are a lot of websites out there promoting penis pumps
as ways to permanently enlarge your penis. However, what I've
uncovered shows that these devices were originally invented to help
men with circulatory problems gain erections - not to make any sort of
permanent change to the size of his (erect or flaccid) penis. To find
collaborating material on this, I tried to stick primarily with
academic websites (ending in .edu), since they were much more likely
to tell it like it is instead of what people *want* to hear.

I've laid out what I've found below, including the most relevant
quotations from these pages. However, for further information, I
recommend you read the entire articles.

Do they work?
*************

In a word - "no".

BIGGER PENIS PROMISES: TRUE CLAIMS, OR FALSE ADVERTISING?
URL: http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/2040.html
Quote: "Penis pumps were developed to help men who have trouble
getting and keeping erections. These erection devices are plastic
cylinders that are placed on a penis, helping men get erections by
drawing blood into the penis. This temporary effect is produced by
means of a vacuum created by pumping air out of the device. When a
satisfactory erection results, the cylinder is removed after placing a
specially designed rubber band, or tourniquet, at the base of the
penis. This holds the blood in the penis and keeps it erect during
sex. (The constrictor band should not be kept in place for longer than
20 minutes.) Penis pumps do not permanently increase penis size. To
increase the size of a penis, you would need to increase the quantity
of tissue, something no amount of vacuuming, rubbing inspired by
ancient wisdom, or hypnotic suggestion will do."

Quarter Pounder or...Whopper
URL: http://xpress.sfsu.edu/custom/magazine/penis2.html
Quote: "Placing the cylinder over the penis and holding it snugly
against the pubic area (shaving may be required to ensure an airtight
fit) the user begins pumping air out of the cylinder, creating a
vacuum. The vacuum stretches the tissues of the penis and the
suspensory ligament while drawing more blood into the penis. The penis
becomes engorged thus enlarging the penis. The question though, is if
the size gain is permanent....'They'll basically give your penis a big
hickie and do nothing in terms of permanent enlargement,' says SFSI
volunteer Campbell-Kibler. 'There is some anecdotal evidence from
users saying their penises have grown, but no clinical evidence
exits,' she says."

Skeptical about Penis Pumps
URL: http://www.shs.unc.edu/chsb/human_sexuality/archives/ppump.htm
Quote: "Penis enlargement pumps are designed to help men whose
erections are not strong, not as strong as they used to be, or to
enable them to engage in intercourse. They can be effective for men
with erectile problems. Penis pumps are only a temporary solution for
increasing penis size and after the pumping, the penis will return to
its original size. If the pump is not used correctly, however, there
can be a loss of sensation, loss of penile skin, and even gangrene.
Your skepticism is understandable. Those ads out there trying to sell
you penis pumps are trying to play on the common male fear that his
penis is somehow inadequate. If you are having erectile difficulties,
you may find that a penis pump is one viable option."

Penis Enlargement
URL: http://www.soc.ucsb.edu/sexinfo/?article=difficulty&refid=012
Quote: "Perhaps the most authoritative source on the subject is the
Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has not approved any method for
the penis enlargement. Some web sites try and get around this fact by
advertising their products as 'FDA approved' when in fact they are
only FDA approved for other applications. For example, there are pumps
on the market that are FDA approved for the treatment of impotence.
The companies selling them also market the pumps as capable of
enlarging one's penis. Web sites use tricky wording such as 'We offer
an FDA approved Product to assist with impotence and reportedly gain
up to 3 inches or more!' to get around the fact that their products
are not FDA approved for penis enlargement."

Penis Enlargement Issue's
URL: http://www.4-men.org/penisenlargementproblems.html
Quote: "Men with diabetes or circulatory disorders have such poor
blood circulation due to their sugar metabolism, that they can't even
get the blood flowing into the area. What the pump does for these men
is stretch the skin and underlying tissues, allowing them to clamp off
the blood flow and consequently trap it in their penis. With the clamp
firmly in place, they can briefly have sex....Take the clamp off and
the erection goes away. Repeated pump use doesn't increase your size,
it only makes your erection depend on it. You might have even seen
pumps advertised as 'FDA Approved'. Well, they are, but only for very
specific health issues."

How to Use Them

Quote:
"Your penis pump should have come with instructions, which you should
follow. There are two basic types of penis pumps: the kind you pump
and the kind that is electrically generated. For safety's sake, do not
use the latter of the two in the presence of water. For both types
there is a basic way to pump it up. In general, do the following:
1. Make sure you have the correct size cylinder. This will vary
depending on your penis size.
2. Insert your penis into the cylinder. To get a good seal it is
recommended to shave the base of your penis and testicles. Also for a
better suction, use an oil-based lubricant.
3. Place the cylinder against the stomach to prevent the testicles
from being sucked into the tube.
4. Increase the pressure in the cylinder slowly and do not continue if
you feel pain. If you feel pain release some of the pressure.
You definitely have to be careful when you're pumping, because yes you
can damage your precious ones. That's why it's important to increase
the pressure slowly over a long period of time, and if pain results
release the pressure. If you don't listen to your body you risk
blisters, bruising, discoloration burst capillaries and temporary
impotence. Most of these symptoms usually disappear in a few days."

Hi al_hgs:

Thanks for the clarification request.

How should I best use the pump?
*******************************

Every brand of pump will have slightly different operating
instructions. My first suggestion to you is to find the instructions
for the pump you purchased and read and follow them carefully. If you
do not have the instructions that came with the pump, then the
following method can be tried:

Is it Safe?
***********

Used properly (and not excessively) a penis pump should be safe.
However, you should monitor your usage closely, making sure that if
you start having pain or discomfort you stop using it immediately and
seek medical help.

Some warnings that I was able to find...

"If the pump is not used correctly, however, there
can be a loss of sensation, loss of penile skin, and even gangrene."
From: http://www.shs.unc.edu/chsb/human_sexuality/archives/ppump.htm

"If you don't listen to your body you risk blisters, bruising,
discoloration burst capillaries and temporary impotence. Most of these
symptoms usually disappear in a few days."
From: http://www.sfsi.org/ask-us/ask189.html

"The problem with a pump is it uses forced vacuum power, not exercise
that stimulates. This can lead to broken blood vessels, which can
actually CAUSE various diseases and problems such as Peyronnie's
disease. Peyronnie's disease is caused by trauma or a minor accident
to the penis, (such as over pumping). The initial accident may be
minor, but as the injury heals, scar tissue forms and deformation
results."
From: http://www.penis-enlargement-secrets.com/pumps.html

As for how often you can use it - if you always use it according to
directions and monitor your usage to make sure there are no side
effects (pain, numbness, skin loss), then you should be able to use
the device several (3 or 4) times a week without adverse effect.

Please remember that we Google Answers Researchers do *not* provide
medical advice. I am only echoing what I found on the internet to you
- I have never personally used such a device. Always be careful - and
always seek proper medical help if you suspect you may have injured
yourself.

Thanks.

You previously said:

"To increase the size of a penis, you would need to increase the quantity
of tissue..."

and you also said:

"The problem with a pump is it uses forced vacuum power, not exercise
that stimulates"

So what *exercises* will actually *stimulate* the tissue causing them to increase?

Thank-you in advance
