Who was golfer Pete Campbell?
I have some old golf balls with his name on them. They were purchased new,
years ago at a local drug store.

Hello chevy415,

Can you give me some idea of when the balls were purchased (5, 10, 20
years ago) and where they were purchased (what state or city)? Are
there any other words or markings on the balls?

Thanks,
Googlenut

The balls were purchased more than 20 years ago at a local Drug Fair
drug store. A 3-pack cost $1.67. Each ball says Pete Campbell with a
number under the name (mine have a 1 or a 3). Opposite this name is
the word "Signature" with the same number under it. Also on the ball
is "made in USA" and the words "solid state". The box says they are
indestructable, can't be cut. (This is not true. I cut them.)

Hello again, chevy415,

Were the balls purchased in New Jersey?

Dear chevy415-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

Peter Campbell was, among other things, a golf Champion at the
Ridgewood Country Club and a graduate of Princeton Class of 1962 where
he was a star basketball player and somewhat of a local sports hero
from 1959 to 1962. Here is his published obituary:

PETER CAMPBELL '62
Pete Campbell died Oct. 23, 1995, at home in Hohokus, N.J. More than
400 friends attended his memorial service, including several
classmates. He is survived by his mother, Helen, his father, W. A.
'33, his brother and sister, as well as his devoted wife, Karen, and
their three children, Peter Jr., Debbie, and Wendy. Many will remember
Pete as the all-American basketball player who broke Chet Forte's Ivy
League scoring record. But for those who really knew him, this was
only one of a number of accomplishments on his never-ending, and
often-achieved, quest for excellence. A brilliant math mind, Pete
graduated from Harvard Business School and worked first at Price
Waterhouse, then as comptroller at First Boston. He then became CFO of
Dillon, Read, and finally, was an options trader on the American Stock
Exchange. He also was golf champion at the Ridgewood Country Club. To
those who knew Pete after Princeton, two qualities immediately come to
mind. First, there was his deep dedication to his wife and children
and to his parents, particularly his father. Second, was Pete's total
commitment to honesty. Pete has now moved on in his quest for
excellence. He will be missed by those who shared his friendship on
this plane of existence.
