Hi there,
My Grandfather John Fowler came out from Lincolnshire to New
Zealand at the age of nine years, in around 1876 I believe, along with
his father Thomas Fowler and his stepmother, and his younger brother
George Aged 7. The Boat they came on was the Waitangi, and We have
been told that they were the only children on the boat. There were
babies and I would think there were teenages but they had a wonderful
time as the sailors let them think they were helping them haul up the
sails etc to give them something to do. I would like to see the
passenger list for the Waitangi as I need to be sure that they were on
that trip as there were I know 300 children on the trip for that year
which came into Lyttleton,NZ, on the 17th September, 1876. I doesn't
make sense withj what we know of them. Can you help please? With
thanks from Jinnyjane

Hi, jinnyjane-ga!

I was not able to find a passenger list for you, so I am posting this
as a clarification in case you can think of anything else that might
help.

According to "Passenger Ships Arriving in Australasian Ports"
http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/mig-nz3.htm#nz3

The ship, the WAITANGI, did arrive on (16/09/1876) in Lyttelton.
Unfortunately, there is no passenger list for that ship. .

Just in case you had the name of the ship wrong, I searched through
every ship arriving into Lyttelton between 1874-1879.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/PassengersLyttelton.htm

There were no Fowlers listed on any ship, except one. The couple did
not match your ancestor's names, but they may be some relation!

The only passenger list available for the Waitangi is for the wrong
year, the wrong port, and has no Fowlers listed!

Hi jinnyjane,
I had this question locked when it was first posted but could not find
a passenger list and was going to post this as a comment to save
others some time but umiat apparently locked it as soon as I unlocked
it :) and it wouldn't let me add the comment. It's almost the same as
umiats info.

I had no luck finding a passenger list for this ship, hopefully
another reacher will have better luck.

Here is what I found out so far:

I don't think there could have been 300 children on the trip because
according to the ships description it only held 350 passengers.

SHIP DESCRIPTIONS
WAITANGI 1873
"The WAITANGI was built in 1873 by J.Blumer & Co, Sunderland for the
New Zealand Shipping Co. She was a 1,161 gross ton sailing vessel, and
was a three masted full rigged ship. Length 222ft x beam 35.1ft
(67,66m x 10,70m), iron construction and accommodation for 350
emigrants. Launched in Nov.1873, she started UK - New Zealand voyages
in Jan.1874 and made 25 voyages for the company before she was sold to
J.Wagle, Arendal, Norway in 1899. Renamed AGDA she was lost at sea in
1913. [Merchant Fleets by Duncan Haws, vol.7, New Zealand Shipping and

Dear researcher,
I am sure the Fowlers you have mentioned are not members of my
family as I know for sure that they were from West Halton in Northern
Lincolnshire. I thought we had a ticket for their passage on the
Waitangi but I am mistaken. My Great Grandfather was a farmer and he
worked as a Plowman on farms around Timaru. His First wife died when
the boys were very little and he married again not long before they
left England for New Zealand. His second wife died in childbirth
about five years after they arrived here, leaving him with a young
girl, Lizzy, about two old, and a baby boy Harry. The older boys John
(My Grandfather, and my Great Uncle George were in their teens by this
stage. Gran dfather used to say they were the only kids on the boat
but I am beginning to think that maybe he meant they were they only
ones old enough to be left to their own devices. On the trip out in
1876 according to the Lyttleton Star newpaper account of the arrival
in port of the Waitangi there were quite a number of children on the
boat. I think maybe they may have been the only boys of that age. I
have the impression they came by land from Lyttleton to Timaru but I
have no proof of that. My family of Fowlers were the only members of
the family who came from Lincolnshire and my grandfather was the onlyu
one to marry and have a family. He had seven sons (one died aged
five) and three daughters. My mother was one and she was the youngest
of the family.
I'm afraid there isn't much to go on and I don't know if there is a
passenger list held anywhere or if it has been distroyed or something.
Would there be one anywhere in England, or any other kind of
confirmation? Thanks again, Jinnyjane.

Hi jinnyjane,

You will find a full report on the arrival of "the fine clipper ship
Waitangi" on page 2 of the Monday, September 18, 1876 edition of "The
Star" newspaper, which is available online at the NZ National
Library's PapersPast website, at:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/data/TS/1876/09/index.html

A passenger list is not provided, but there is some detail of the
groups of people on board, which I'm sure you will find very
interesting. For example, this report confirms that this was the
first arrival of this particular ship in New Zealand.

Best of luck
