I'm looking for walk-through instructions for a Debian Linux
installation process that result in X Windows running with accelerated
3D graphics on either an FIC AT31 Fusion Radeon-based motherboard or
an ABIT NF7-M nForce-based motherboard. I've run in trouble with X
either not recognizing the device (Radeon) or the nvidia drivers
refusing to load (nForce).

deeptape-ga,

I've located two resources which describe, in-depth, XFree86 running
on the nForce boards. Would these resources be acceptable as an
answer? They appear to be walkthroughs. They aren't specifically for
Debian, but I could adapt them or provide indications of "the right
direction". I may also be able to locate Debian packages. One of the
resource is at:

http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1031&sid=eb5a746fcff0b91471e3862e7fe9d73c

The Linux kernel driver location for this is:

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_nforce_1.0-0261

Also, the new development relase of the kernel has some significant
nForce-related changes. This release is about to be frozen so that
Linus can do work on 2.6:

deeptape-ga,

Are either of these resources helpful for you? Should I post them as an answer?

Here is the answer since it is quickly coming up on your due date.

You need to be running at least a current Stable system a fully
updated testing box will work better ask me for more info.

In any case here is what you want to do

apt-get update
apt-get install nvidia-glx-src nvidia-kernel-src

You then want to read /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx-src and
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-src. When I get home I'll double check
the paths but you get the idea, and do what the readmes in those
directories say to do you then need to edit /etc/X11/XF-86config (Once
again from memory likely wrong but you should be able to find it. And
change from the nv driver to nvidia. Later I'll post examples from my
home machine. In any case that should get it up and going.

Let me know if you have any questions.
