Hello steph1761,
I was originally going to post this as an answer, but there is so
little about this type of problem available that I do not have total
confidence these suggestions will cure your problem. But they might.
Do let me know.
This is a tricky one and you did not mention which printer you are
using, whether it is postscript or not and if this happens in any
other application. That being said, I am going to go out on a limb a
bit here as this type of problem only seems to occur in several ways.
It is most likely not Windows XP as the cause of the problem.
This Microsoft Knowledgebase article may be of help, though:

"WD: Highlighting Prints Black on Monochrome Printers
SYMPTOMS
When you print text that has been formatted with the Highlight button,
the selection prints solid black.
CAUSE
You have selected "Print Colors as Black on Noncolor Printers." To
locate this option, click Options on the Tools menu, and then select
the Compatibility tab.
WORKAROUND
To print the highlighting in gray scale, clear the "Print colors as
black on noncolor printers" option by doing the following:
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Select the Compatibility tab.
Under Recommended Options For, make sure that either Microsoft Word 97
(for Word 97) or Microsoft Word 6.0-7.0 (for Word 95) is selected.
Click to select "Print colors as black on noncolor printers".
Click Default and then click OK..."
Is it possible that the background that "appears" to be white for your
calendar is actually a light color? If so, this could be the cause of
the problem. Does Outlook have a similar option to Word as mentioned
above where you might have "Print Colors as Black" selected? This is
worth investigating.

"Limitations of Printing from PageMaker to a Non-PostScript Printer
What's Covered
Differences Between PostScript and Non-PostScript Printing Languages
How System Configuration Affects Non-PostScript Printing
Limitations When Printing to Non-PostScript Printers
Using a PostScript Printer Driver without a PostScript Printer...
...Most non-PostScript printers print text on top of all other objects
on the page (that is, in front of other objects). Most also print text
as solid black. Therefore, reversed text, which is usually positioned
over a black or colored background, prints black on top of a solid
background. In addition, if you use a paper-colored box to cover text,
the text prints on top of it.
You can change the way text prints to a non-PostScript printer by
sending it as a graphic. This technique lets the driver print
everything at the same time, without printing the text on top of other
objects. Most non-PostScript printer drivers include a Print Text as
Graphics or Print TrueType Fonts as Graphics option...."
I would look carefully at the options in Outlook as well as your
printer driver. Internet Explorer, for example, has an option to print
the background or not. Outlook Express does not have this. Some
printer drivers include the print text as graphics and / or a print
negative option. Carefully looking into these settings may just fix
the problem.
If neither of these things work, post details of your printer and let
me know if this occurs with any other program and I will attempt to
help further.
Regards,
