IE6 history gets deleted in about one out of 3-6 reboots. Does not
happen on Hibernate. Win XP-PRO. Looked everywhere I could think off.
Thanks, Eldad.

Hello Eldad,

Do you happen to use McAfee VirusScan?

In thread "IE6 won't keep history", ateizzynuff says:
"Got it - a McAfee VirusScan 6.01 conflict with IE6. To
avoid this behavior we had to disable the ActiveX Controls
applet filter in the McAfee Internet Filter."

Hope it helps.

Intermittently after a reboot, when I click the Internet History
button, I discover that Internet History entries (visited sites) are
deleted. This happens only every about 3-6 reboots, or so, not every
time.
Does not happen after Hibernation.
Eldad.

Have you allowed sufficient cache space for "Temporary Internet
files", as discussed here:

Hello "sa-ga", thanks for your answer.
"check for newer version of Internet pages" was set to "automatically".
Cache was set to 10MBytes, per some recommendation to "keep it small".
I increased it now to 100MBytes. I'll do 'Turn off' now instead of 'Hibernate'
for a few days to see if this solves the problem.
Any other suggestions?.......Eldad

To sa-ga, It happened even after I increased IE cache to 100MByte.
To Adam-ga, It does not seem to be related to a crash, but I'll check
at that web site. Scheduler is not set up for any clearing, it is only
set up for virus def. update, and for a System Restore check point
generation.
Tweak UI is not set for any deletions.
The strange thing is that it happens sporadically, I can shut off and
start a few times, and it is fine, than it will happen on the
next.....Eldad.

To Adam-ga, Clarification: It is not the Internet sites pages that are
deleted
(Internet temporary files), but the History file, the URLs of the
visited sites (Click History button on the toolbar to see), which I
don't think are stored in the "Internet temporary files", but in a
"History" file. I think the "Cache Sentry" deals only with the
former....Eldad.

I believe your history being cleared is due to a behaviour of Windows
XP.
Under some circumstances with a fatal system crash, Windows can delete
the index of your internet history in case it is corrupted.

There is a free utility called 'CacheSentry' that provides fixes for a
lot of the problems with Internet Explorer's caching system. Here is a
quote from their webpage:

'Note that with Windows XP when you see a "blue screen of death" fatal
system error message, the operating system will often delete the cache
in case the crash is related to a corrupt index.dat file. So if you
see your cache suddenly clear(sic) itself and you recently suffered
from a fatal system error, this may be why that happened.'

You can find out more information from the CacheSentry website where
that quote is taken from:

http://www.mindspring.com/~dpoch/enigmatic/cachesentry.html

If you are not having system crashes when your history is lost, I
would suggest checking Scheduled Tasks, and see if any task is being
run that corresponds with your history being deleted (such as a virus
scanner). TweakUI and other similar 'tweaking' programs often have an
option to clear Internet Explorer's history, either at login or at a
specified time.

If none of those are the culprit, let me know and I can look into
other causes. Hope that helps.

You can try resetting radically IE history in the following way:
- restart your computer in "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"
- using DELTREE, delete the whole content of the "History" directory
(which is a subdirectory of "Windows"). It will be automatically
recreated the next time Windows is loaded.
Hope it helps.
