It's odd that this saying does not show up in search engine results;
it's a good saying! I have found something similar saying that
reverses the order: you can use blues to cure the blues. Would this
be a sufficient answer?

I'm pretty sure the quote is indeed "What the blues are, the blues can
cure." Originally, I thought it was either B. B. King or Louis
Armstrong, but haven't been able to find it in the info I have on
them. Strangely, I want to use it in connection with the work of
Samuel Beckett. If you can't find that particular quote (and, yes,
it's a terrific line) I would at least like to know the source of the
similar quote you did find. Thanks.

I'll take another look, and so presumably will other Researchers. If
no one finds anything better in a couple of days, I suppose I will
then post my similar quote.

I have found a few references to a quote from B.B. King -- who, as the
bluesman, seems a more likely candidate than Louis Armstronng, the
jazzman -- about the blues being a cure. The quote doesn't say what
the blues are, but does say that the blues cure. I'll add this quote
to my answer, in the event that no one comes up with a better answer
first.

Doubt the quote is from BB King or any other famous black blues
singer- They are more like to say "the blues is" rather than the "the
blues are" - I did find a quote from lyrics of song by danny brant at
www.dannybrantband.com that reads:
"Ain't no cure for the blues
No there ain't no cure for the blues
There ain't no cure for the blues
Baby like the blues"
