In the past two days I have experienced that dreaded blue
screen........ :(
All of a sudden my pooter just dies and the blue screen appears.
Only new thing I can think of was that I changed my screensaver to
show pics I took... about 200 pics I think...
I have had Norton scan running and I did get a couple of bad files
which I have quarantied.........
I don't have a clue why this is happening suddenly.....
I have to manually shut down my pooter by holding the "button"...
I do not like to do this & never have before but its the only way I
can get back online.
Could it be because I saved my pics to a screensaver??????
Thats all that I did different... |

steph53...
Thanks for the confidence you've expressed by asking for me.
Since this is a problem with many potential causes, I cannot
simply post a sure answer, but I will be happy to work with
you until we reach a solution.
The comment posted by joelpt-ga is a good place to start.
De-activate your screensaver and leave your camera unplugged
as you do a fresh boot-up. See how the computer works without
invoking those two programs. If it seems to be okay, then
you can play with plugging in your camera and downloading
pictures. If that works okay, then play with starting up the
screensaver. When and if you get the Blue Screen of Death
(BSOD), make a note of the time. It will come in handy for
checking the system and error messages which occurred at
the same time as the BSOD.
Also, the fact that Norton has quarantined a couple of
files suggests that there may be some problems with the
remains of a virus or trojan program, or with some
ad-ware/spy-ware.
I recommend getting a 'second opinion', as it were, by
going to Trend Micro's online virus scanning page, and
seeing what they find on your computer:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/
Let me know where this takes you, and if you need assistance
with anything I've suggested so far.

Sublime1...
Camera is not plugged in..........
Pics were downloaded long time ago...
I don;t think this is where a virus may have got me.......
However, something is very wrong since I added them to my screensaver...
EG: I went out today for 2 hours.........
Got home and screensaver was still on.........
Very strange as previously my monitor would just shut off...

The fact that your screensaver is functioning for a
2 hour stretch makes me doubt that it is the cause
of your Blue Screen.
Your monitor shutting off is a function of the
'Power Management' settings in the Control Panel.
These settings may have been changed by the
screensaver program. If you want to look at them,
go to the 'Start' button, move to 'Settings' ->
'Control Panel' and open 'Power Options'.
In the middle of the 'Power Schemes' tab page,
is a drop-down box for 'Turn off monitor'.
If it is set for 'Never', you can change it
to what you prefer. Make sure you click 'Apply'
and then 'OK', if you change the setting.

This should not matter in the slightest, unless you
think there could have been a virus in the album.
Otherwise, it shouldn't make any difference.
So far, I'm not seeing any cause for the BSOD, so,
like I said, when it happens again, make a note of
the exact time it occurs, and we can go from there.

Hello sublime1-ga...
Thanks for the housecall anti-virus site. They scannned my machine and
found 13 infected files!!!!!!!!!!!! So I had my Norton 2002 scan and
they came up with the same number. They are now all quarantined tg.
As they are not repairable, should I delete them all to permanently
remove them???
The powermanagement options to my monitor had changed its settings by
itself somehow:-)...so that is all back to normal now.
Thanks again...

I'm so glad you found all those infected files. You might
want to keep them in quarantine for a few days to see if
your computer runs alright without them. If you get any
messages from any programs you run in the next few days,
stating, e.g., that it can't find ***.dll file, you can
check the quarantined files to see if that file is found
there, but chances are the naughty files are unnecessary
files which were added to your system. If you see no
problems in the next few days, go ahead and delete them.
The Power Management settings were probably changed by
the screensaver when you set it up, as they tend to
assume that, if you're going to run their wonderful
screensaver, you don't want to shut your monitor off,
ever... : )
I haven't heard anything more about the Blue Screen,
so it's possible that the infected files were causing
your crash. Should I post a token answer to this
question? You can postpone rating it until you're
sure you are beyond the need of further clarifications.

Hi Sublime1-ga...
Yes please post answer as it seems the BSOD has not appeared since I
quarantined the bad files.
Guess I should be scanning my pooter more often...
Thanks for all your help!!! :)
