Hello lynnes-ga,

It is possible that there is more than one article on experiments
being conducted on the sense of smell. I have found this article:

"U.S. Military Is Seeking Ultimate 'Stink Bomb'", by Bijal P. Trivedi
(January 7, 2002)
National Geographic Online
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/01/0107_020107TVstinkbomb.html

If this is not the correct article, please let me know. (Anything
that you can remember about the article -- when you read it, where you
read it (in print or online), specifics about the article, etc. --
might help me to find it for you.)

Hi,

Actually I found the stink bomb article on the National Geographic
site myself. No, what I'm looking for appeared sometime in the 1990s
(I think) and it was to do with trying to find out more about smell. I
remember photographs of women in lab coats sniffing people's arm
pits... I don't know why Switzerland sticks in my mind. It may or may
not be relevant.

Here is a list of all of the articles (and other publications) by
National Geographic for the subject "Sense of Smell" since 1980:

"Smell, sense of" [Subject Browse, 1980 to date]
National Geographic Online
http://library2.nationalgeographic.com/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?Search_Arg=smell&SL=Submit%26DATE%3D1980%26DTBL%3DG%7C2&Search_Code=SUBJ_&PID=13299&CNT=50&HC=25&BROWSE=1&HC=25&SID=5

I did not see any that obviously focused on Switzerland. Several
mention a center in Philadelphia.

"Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania" [Subject
Browse, 1980 to date]
National Geographic Online
http://library2.nationalgeographic.com/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?SC=Subject&PID=13299&SA=Monell+Chemical+Senses+Center,+Philadelphia,+Pennsylvania&BROWSE=1&HC=5&SID=11

Do you think that one of these is the article you are looking for?

Here also is the Howard Hughes Medical Institute website:

Please note: This website has been known to disappear into a Las
Vegas hotel room from time-to-time.
