Hello, I have found that L:-D could mean "just graduated", or it could be a "smiling flattop". (as with most smilies it depends on context) I have also found that :-* could mean "Kiss", "Opps", or "Ate something sour" I have also found that :-*U COULD be a smiley with a mustache. http://www.chemie.fu-berlin.de/outerspace/netnews/smilies.html http://www.cg.tuwien.ac.at/~helwig/smileys.html http://paul.merton.ox.ac.uk/ascii/smileys.html However sometimes complex smiley guys have 1 and only 1 meaning, for example: =}>;*{)) That monster is "Mega-Smilie... A drunk, devilish chef with a toupee in an updraft, a mustache, and a double chin" http://www.astro.umd.edu/~marshall/smileys.html However, it could be the case that this is a lewd smiley such as: :-):-*8(-: Having intercourse :-) :-... Urinating I see many similarities between the 2 above smilies and the smiley in question. Where did you come across this "shorthand"? I may be able to give a better translation if I saw the context. ----------------------------- I have also found that VEY is the airport code for Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, but that is probably unrelated. Hope this helps, if you want to know more then just let me know. --jld |

Hi there, I love this question! Actually they are referred to as Internet Shorthand... :) Here are a few links for you to view many used "smileys" or "emoticons" as they are called. Useful Internet emoticons ( http://www.randomhouse.com/features/davebarry/emoticon.html ) "As a new person or "newbie" on the Internet, you'll probably be struck by the fact that a lot of the messages contain odd-looking words and punctuation. This is a kind of "shorthand" that Internet users have developed so they can express certain thoughts and emotions without wasting valuable time typing them out." Smileys and Emoticons for Effective Communication ( http://www.windweaver.com/emoticon.htm ) And in addition to smilies many abbreviations are used to add personality and save keystrokes (computer shorthand) - Here aerr some commonly used abbreviations: BFN Bye For Now BTW By The Way G Grin HTH Hope This Helps IJWTK I Just Want To Know IJWTS I Just Want To Say IMHO In My Humble Opinion LOL Laughing Out Loud OTOH On The Other Hand ROTFL Rolling on the Floor Laughing TOY Thinking of You YMMV Your Mileage May Vary HTH ~ (Hope this helps) :) tlspiegel-ga |

webadept-ga Is totally right. Everyone else just made it more complicated. I think it comes with staring at code for too long. :-) |

Definitive comment on the origins "of the sideways 'smiley face' (sometimes called an 'emoticon')" http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~sef/sefSmiley.htm (by the inventor) http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=emoticon Hope that helps flamingpenguin-ga |
