I'm running Mac OS X 10.2.6; and iPhoto 2. Am I able to 'retrieve'
photos that I moved to the iPhoto trash (I have told iPhoto that I
wanted to Empty the Trash - and the photos ARE NOT NOW in the General
Trash). If so, how?

Hello truman,

Thank you for your question.

The short answer is "maybe". It really depends on how much you have
used your computer since deleting these files. As you use your
computer, the odds increase that the space on your hard drive that was
once occupied with these files has been overwritten. So, stop all
activity and then try some of the known data recovery tools.

For many years, the industry standard was Norton Utilities that
includes a program called Unerase. In the old days, you could run this
from a floppy so you did not disturb the hard drive condition as you
searched for files that could be recovered. It should run from a CD
now-a-days.

"Optimize performance and solve problems easily with Norton Utilities
for Macintosh 7.0, the world's best-selling product for MacŪ disk
repair, disk optimization, and data recovery. Norton Disk Doctor™
finds and repairs disk problems with a click of a button. Run it from
the bootable program CD when your hard drive won't restart. Speed
Disk™ optimizes your drive's performance. UnErase™ helps you restore
deleted files. And Norton FileSaver™ and Volume Recover™ allow you to
rebuild damaged file directories. Now this comprehensive set of
utilities also supports Mac OS X systems with new versions of Norton
Disk Doctor, Norton FileSaver, Speed Disk, and UnErase..

...A bootable program CD lets you repair your hard disk, optimize
files, and recover data...

Another option is Prosoft's Data Rescue:

Data Rescue

"Focusing on data recovery, not hard drive repair, Data Rescue can
recover valuable data from a corrupt drive, even if it no longer
mounts! Data Rescue does not write to your damaged hard disk, instead
it writes your to files to a second drive - ensuring that your data
can be restored without further damage. For emergency use, Data Rescue
ships on a Mac bootable CD*...

...As a computer user, you know one thing for sure - someday you will
lose valuable files, work and time because of a software or hardware
failure.

Now there is a solution!

Data Rescue can recover your endangered files, even after other
products have failed.

Why is Data Rescue Different?

Focusing on data recovery, instead of hard drive repair, Data Rescue
will work in more cases, recover more effectively, and deliver your
files in better condition than other utilities you may have tried in
the past.

Data Rescue analyzes your entire hard drive looking for your data,
then it meticulously re-assembles your files and stores them to a
different location..."

Data Rescue retails for $89 and Norton Utilities for $99. Both can be
found on and offline for discounted prices.

While there are no guarantees you will recover your data, programs
like this are your best bet. Do discontinue any use of your computer
until you have run one of these utilities if your data is valuable to
you.
