Question ID: 212940
Hi, I need to know as much as possible about Wicker hanging chairs
(the kind that are suspended from a ceiling and in a basket / bubble
shape).

As far as I know the classic design
(http://www.20thcenturymarks.co.uk/pages/single/604.html) appeared in
the late 1960's.

I'd like any information on
  -- The original designer
  -- general history
  -- releated websites
  -- anything else relevent

Thanks.

Hello brenclarke and thank you for your question.

Are you specifically interested in hanging chairs made of 'wicker', or
are you interested in hanging chairs in general.

Best regards

Hello brenclarke and thank you for your question and subsequent
clarification.

Although the image of a hanging rattan chair evokes images of the
sixties it was originally designed in 1957 by Nanna Ditzel:

"HANGING CHAIR, 1957
DESIGN: NANNA & JØRGEN DITZEL
PRODUCED BY PIERANTONIO BONACINA
ITALY"
http://www.nanna-ditzel-design.dk/CONTENT5.html

For a biography of NANNA DITZEL see:
http://www.scandinaviandesign.com/nannaditzel/

Also if you go to : (The manufacturers of the chair)
http://www.bonacinapierantonio.it/

Click on 'English' then click on the graphic of a wicker chair, it
gives you a brief description of the chair:
"Hanging wicker armchair woven on a lacquered steel
frame.Nickel-plated chain and fixing catch included.
Shaped seat cushion in polyurethane foam and polyester fibre.Removable
cover.
Fabric: m. 1.40"

There are also some for sale at the following websites, in various
designs:

You can read a short article here (Only availabe in the Google cache)
"The hanging chair - generally finished in tough, creaky rattan - was
another stalwart of the 1960s pad, hanging from the rafters like a
cane womb suspended from a ceiling."

There is also a discussion regarding them here:
