Ah...Michelangelo's David. If one statue is a masterpiece, surely 17
of them can only multiply the glory...or so the thinking apparently
goes.
The display at Youngwood Court has a fair amount of noteriety, having
been written up in newspapers in Dallas, Memphis, Toronto and, of
course, Los Angeles.
Here's an excerpt from the LA Times:
House of 'David'
When 17 replicas of Michelangelo's famed statue adorn the outside of a
home, is it art or excess?
The Los Angeles Times Nov 17, 1997
It is one of most recognizable sculptures in the world, a monument to
the perfect male form, a paramount symbol of Renaissance art.
Michelangelo's "David."
Norwood Young's got 17 of them.
They line his mansion's semicircular driveway--two sets of eight
3-foot-high replicas on column pedestals, flanking each side of a
diminutive "Venus de Milo." A lone "David" sits atop Young's roof,
along with six plaster models of Greco Roman-style busts. The statues
are irregular, each one slightly different from the other.
Young, who set up the statues a year ago, thinks he's improved the
neighborhood. The neighborhood--stately, affluent Hancock
Park--strongly disagrees...

go on....guess):

Suffice it to say, Mr. Young, a self-described recording artist, likes
his Davids, who he says were inspired by a dream, and doesn't really
give a @#$%**!! what the neighbors think. The neighbors, for their
part, are mixed -- either hating it, or greeting it all with a cosmic
shrug of the shoulders. For what it's worth, the owner of the
multi-Davids has a reputation as a good neighbor, the statues
themselves not withstanding.
