Hello wm-ga!
I live in DC and often have to go NYC on a budget. I have found that
the following options are your best bet.
1. For the cheapest tickets from NYC to DC, take one of the Chinatown
buses.
They run from 88 East Broadway to 610 I Street. It's not exactly Union
Station, but it's only two metro stations (on the red line) from Union
Station and is by far your cheapest option. You can buy the tickets
online, $20/person one way at
http://www.ivymedia.com/todaytravel/newyork_washingtondc/index.html or
http://www.2000coach.com/dcnewyork.html.
Buses leave NYC at 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm on June
10th. Travel time is about 4 hours.
Check out www.wmata.com for a map of the DC metro system and to map
your route from Chinatown metro to Union Station.
2. Greyhound is probably the next cheapest route.
They run from Port Authority to Union Station and cost $42/person one
way and can be purchased online at www.greyhound.com. Please note that
since it is a special service line, companion fares and other
discounts may not apply.
Buses leave NYC at 7:00 am and 1:00 pm.
3. Amtrak is usually the most expensive unless you plan a couple weeks
in advance and take advantage of their weekly specials. The train,
however, provides more options for when you leave.
These run from Penn Station to Union Station and cost $72/person one
way and can be purchased online at www.amtrak.com.
Trains leave NYC at 6:00 am, 6:35 am, etc. (about every 30 minutes).
