I have a question pending that has not been answered, nor have I been apprised of any progress on answering the question in the last few days. Perhaps the answer cannot be found. The question was: What is the ethnic makeup of Miami-Dade County over the last fifty years? If that information is not available, I need to know what the ethnic makeup of the US or Florida was over the last fifty years. (I would guess that the census for each year from 1950 to the present would provide the information, but I have not been able to track down non-current censuses on the Internet.) Anyway, can you answer the question with regard to the US or Florida. The one catch is that I need the information no later than tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. EDT. Any later than that and it is of no use to me. Let me know what you can do. |

Hi daisy57, That was a harder question than I expected - no wonder you've been having trouble finding someone to answer it for you. The data below comes from many sources (as noted), but the source linked for 1830-1990 has a nice comprehensive total using the same designations for race, avoiding the problem of one year having Japanese, Filipino, etc. broken out rather than grouped as "Pacific Islander" whereas others have no Pacific Islander designation at all. We are of course at the mercy of the Census Bureau which decides what questions to ask. Without further ado, here is the data. 1950: (State of Florida) 36.47% native white male 37.25% native white female 10.58% negro male 11.18% negro female 2.28% foreign or other male 2.23% foreign or other female 1960: (State of Florida) 40.40% white male 41.67% white female 8.73% negro male 9.05% negro female 0.03% indian male 0.01% indian female 0.01% japanese male 0.02% japanese female 0.02% chinese male 0.01% chinese female 0.02% filipino male 0.01% filipino female 0.02% other male 0.01% other female 1970: (State of Florida) 84.2% white 15.3% black 0.1% american indian / eskimo / aleut 0.2% asian / pacific islander 0.1% other 6.6% hispanic (any) 77.9% white (not hispanic) 1980: (State of Florida) 84.0% white 13.8% black 0.2% american indian / eskimo / aleut 0.6% asian / pacific islander 1.5% other 8.8% hispanic (any) 76.7% white (not hispanic) 1990: (State of Florida) 73.24% white 13.15% black 12.17% hispanic 1.19% asian / pacific islander 0.28% american indian / alaskan native 0.06% other 2000: 65.4% white 16.8% hispanic/latino 14.6% black 0.3% american indian and alaska native 1.7% asian 0.1% native hawaiian and other pacific islander 3.0% other (1 race) 2.4% other (2 or more races) Sources: 1830-1990: http://www.census.gov/population/documentation/twps0056/tab24.pdf 1950-60: http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/census/ 1990: http://censtats.census.gov/pl94/pl94.shtml 2000: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/12000.html I hope this answers your question. If not, I will be checking for clarification requests as frequently as I can up to your deadline and hope to be able to clear up any questions you have. -Haversian |

Daisy, I hope you'll get an answer soon. Your question has not been ignored; I spent nearly an hour on it, and other Researchers have also made trial runs without success. You may want to consider raising your fee; when it is evident that a question is going to take several hours of work, many Researchers are unwilling to undertake a project unless the compensation seems adequate. The Researcher's share of your $10 fee is only $7.50; unless an answer can be located quickly, some of us are likely to pass on this kind of project. |

Just a reminder :) Please remember that the US Census definition of each of these categories has changed a number of times and therefore the numbers from the different Census years are not easily comparable. For example, the 1990 and 2000 Census numbers for race and ethnicity are not comparable. |
